Why would you assume the writer gets to choose the logo? I'm not saying he didn't - I don't know - but I'd have thought it more likely it was the art department.

I always found Crikey to be slightly disappointing. I felt the level of research could be a bit lacking. I remember one issue had an article on Captain Hurricane from Valiant that completely failed to mention his trademark "raging fury"!
