Re: Thoughts on collecting comics

Aha. I've looked up Edgar Church and the "Mile High" collection, and he's a classic example of an artist who collected comics (and magazines) for reference. That's how I justify my collecting to myself when I think perhaps I've got too many books and papers taking up space in the house!

Re: Little Plum

Did Baxendale have other work lined up when he resigned, such as an offer from Odhams? I can't help thinking of Harvey Kurtzman walking out of Mad after a disagreement with Bill Gaines, knowing he had an offer of work from Hugh Hefner. (Unfortunately Trump was doomed, and only lasted two issues, unl...

Re: Thoughts on collecting comics

Do any of us who write or draw comics collect comics for inspiration? That, and nostalgia for my early years of reading, is why I buy them. I draw funnies, so it's mostly funnies I go for, but I'll collect other genres if I like the art, and the comics aren't too expensive. I don't try to complete r...

Re: Your Top Five British superheroes: a poll

How many of you would include Popeye and Desperate Dan in a broad definition of "superhero"? I don't think it matters if it's played for laughs, Captain Marvel was, and how important is a costume anyway?

Re: What comics did you buy today?

The Beano, 5.12.2015, from a newsagent in Apollo Bay, Victoria. Which is remarkable, because I've not seen a Beano in an Australian newsagent since the Seventies. As for the comic, it's not bad, but I wish the designer was a bit more careful with the placement of the word balloons, which tend to blo...

Re: Treasure: Wee Willie Winkie visits Fleetway

I think the sky on my original was added later, Phil. There's blue paint on the registration marks stuck on by the printer. Jackson was alternating with Michael Godfrey on "Wonderful Story Of Britain" around this time, but even so the quality of his art is amazing. Here's my favourite from early Tre...

Re: Treasure: Wee Willie Winkie visits Fleetway

Thanks Phil, I haven't found that issue yet. Obviously Jackson's drawing was far better than it needed to be for its original purpose. Perhaps Fleetway wanted a high level of detail for possible reprints; did Jackson also produce paintings for those large eductional posters used in primary schools?

Re: Treasure: Wee Willie Winkie visits Fleetway

Hi all, I've just bought this original Treasure page by Peter Jackson, and I'm astounded by the level of detail in his art. Here's the full page, 13" x 17", of Roger Bacon preaching to a sceptical audience: bacontreasure.jpg Here's a close-up, about an inch square. The man's head is the size of a th...

Who were the artist-writers?

Many years ago I read an article on the history of the Dr Who strip in TV Comic. In this the author made a distinction between American and British comics, claiming that British strips were generally written by the artists who drew them. That's not generally so, is it? We may not know the name of th...

Carol and I are in that show. A bit far away for me to visit, unfortunately.
