Re: Public school stories

But there was also a bit of superiority in them as well, given the sheer number of lords, dukes and sirs who populated the stories. Yes. I used to wonder why people referred to boarding/public school stories as "old-fashioned" or "outdated", when these schools still exist. But what has changed (apa...

Re: Public school stories

The worldwide success of Harry Potter proves that this genre is still popular. In fact I'd guess it appeals rather more to less privileged children than those who actually DO get packed off to boarding school by well-off parents. You might be onto something there. When I was a kid, I, a comprehensi...

Public school stories

What are people's thoughts on this genre? Propaganda geared to getting the lower orders to look up to their betters, and justify the old empire, or a ready-made closed-world setting ideal for generating story ideas? [Edit: or any other view you may have. Not meaning to imply these are the only two v...

No, it doesn't cover that period, and it was Dennis Wilson that was involved with Manson.

This is really nice. But is it just me or is not quite Bob McGrath's style?

Re: Addie and Hermy in the Dandy

I thought I posted in this thread, but it looks like it didn't take. Just to say that judging from the examples in the "Legend of Lord Snooty" book, Snooty and his pals fight Hitler (in person) throughout 1940, and after 1940 those strips cease. I favour Phil's theory that Hitler and Goering just di...

Good luck, col.
I have the 1976 Victor annual; always thought it had a strange cover. (Gaudy colours for a battle scene).

Re: Your Favourite No.1s

The only #1 comics I remember getting in my comics-reading childhood (late 80s-just into the 90s) were licensed TV-tie in titles or reprint monthlies. Having read this thread I feel left out.

Re: What comics did you buy today?

In Border Bookshop in Todmorden on Friday, I bought the John Ryan "Harris Tweed" collection, The amazing surrealistic sketchbook "The Doyle Diary" by Charles Altamont Doyle (father of Sir Arthur Conan of that ilk), and Marsden and Moore's "This Was the Wizard".

Re: John Geering's 70s Hotspur strips, and other 'phunnies'

I do see what you mean, and I never doubted that he could have done much more detailed drawings if he had wanted to, and if they had made it more worth his while. But the great thing about JK Geering (and I've said before he was my favourite artist as a kid) is that he didn't really need to try very...

Re: John Geering's 70s Hotspur strips, and other 'phunnies'

Thanks for your thoughts on this, Peter. Do you not agree though that the J G examples above are more carefully-drawn [ie slower to draw, with more thought put into them] than his 80s and 90s work, which was very rushed-looking in comparison? . I think there is a difference, but I don't see such a ...

Re: Uncensored Action! (The Best of Action)

By the way, the strips from that issue were published in Action: The Story of a Violent Comic, by Martin Barker. Long out of print but worth tracking down. Further to Lew's comment above, in his footnote to his introduction to that book Martin Barker states More detailed information about my resear...

Re: Damaged Annuals

I'm the guy who snaps up cheaply the stuff you all reject. I remember as a kid in my local antiques shop finding the 1961 Beezer Book with damaged spine, some pages missing, coloured crayon marks scribbled throughout. It was 50p and I was so excited to have found such an ancient treasure for such a ...

Re: SPARKY "Writers"

It's no surprise that the older characters in Sparky such as Hungry Horace and Keyhole Kate reused old stories in the early years of "Sparky" as they often have two quite unrelated episodes making up one story. Which is a dead giveaway considering the stories were originally only half page or a thir...
