Re: What comics did you buy today?
That "Scare Bear" story is a swipe from Wrightson's "Captain Sternn" in Heavy Metal!

By the later Sixties, whackings were being artfully avoided:
or ridiculed:
But I remember the Dandy was still quite nasty at times.- 22 Mar 2013, 03:05

Re: What was inside Playhour pictures...? Playhour chat
Bunny Cuddles was the most obsessive of the bunch, and my favourite McNeill character at the time. His world was completely centred on jam, with Tiny providing the ineffectual voice of sanity. Harold liked his carrots, but he usually had other more adult problems to occupy him, like malfunctioning w...

Phil, did Blasco have a studio? I may be wrong, but wasn't he drawing "Steel Claw", "Rob Riley" and "Edward And The Jumblies" simultaneously? That's an awful lot of detailed high-quality art for one person to turn out each week.

The last picture is so terribly English. I remember plenty of picnics like that!

It's mostly the variation in the head size. You've got to be really careful with that or you end up adding five birthdays!

Re: Spot the comic
Thanks for the scans, Steve! You've reminded how much I loved "The Gasworks Gang"; it's a lot uglier than "Bash Street", isn't it? Do you have the numbers or dates for those issues of Cor!! ? With a few exceptions, I only paid attention to full-colour adventure strips when I was young. I'd look at a...

Wow! Thanks so much, Steve! Did you make a note of the issue dates/numbers? I'll add them to my wants list.

Here's part of the "Seaweeders" set from an Australian cereal box back, diorama illustration also by Hargreaves. These giveaways were in Puffa Puffa Rice in the UK.

Re: Buster with fizzy drink powder
Thanks, guys. Steve, I do the same kind of thing, going through piles of comics when I should be drawing, or asleep in bed, but I'm sure your collection is larger!

Re: HARRY HARGREAVES
The "Bird" has the classic Hargreaves chunky shape and "hairy" lines. I wouldn't have recognised "Scamp" as his work.

Re: Buster with fizzy drink powder
Maybe it was the 1966 issue after all, or it was another comic entirely. It's so long ago.

Re: HARRY HARGREAVES
The toy is a Winkie Doll, and I think these predated Moony, hence the poor resemblance. They came in several variations and sizes, and were once common as cheap prizes at fun-fairs. Actually, that's an interesting subject, comic character dolls. The only example I have is a Tivvy moneybox with a nic...
