Re: Les Barton: sad news
I'm guessing that Les Barton was the man behind Ticklish Allsorts? I so, in terms of layout, he's my favourite artist ever. I just LOVE the way he fills every square millimetre with fun. The shapes, the lettering, EVERYTHING is just perfect use of space. For me, this is the standard by which all com...

Re: Did anyone buy this comic from 1976?
I remember this one! I don't know it I'd even call it a comic - it felt more like more a fanzine. I don't know who it was aimed at. I remember thinking "this is VERY high quality stuff, but I don't know anyone who'd buy it". Apart from me, and I think I got mine from a half price bin. Still remember...

Re: Got a few pennies Guv'nor?
One of the most interesting aspects for looking at old comics is how they reflect the respective decades they are in. Strongly agree! And this doesn't have to be a problem for new readers, if the stories are strong enough. Sherlock Holme's London is a big selling point. And modern kids love stories...

Re: Got a few pennies Guv'nor?
I'd love really cheap (like 10p/issue cheap) copies of all those tens of thousands of comics I missed. I'm not sure whether tolworthy is presenting an accurate statement here of what he would consider to be a purchasing opportunity that he couldn't possibly turn down, or whether he is guilty of exa...

Got a few pennies Guv'nor?
Price. I don't want to start another copyright debate (the last one ended with the entire board going down!) but there are thousands of comics I'd like to buy if they were really cheap. I don't use pirate copies on principle (except where a comic is essential and not available by other means). And I...

Re: Bill & Coo (from Wow)
Does any-one else remember this or other Wow story's fondly I remember Wow! it came out just at the time I was the target age. I seem to remember it was on very good quality paper - the same newsprint, but it just felt really substantial. Maybe it was because at the time I got most of my comics fro...

Re: A lament for the comic year
When I was a kid if you, or more likely your mum and dad, hadn't bought up your quota of annuals at full price by Xmas they were gone. I remember the first year there was Beano Book still in the shops, reduced, after Christmas. Late 1980s? Early 1990s? I had seen inferior annuals reduced before tha...

Re: A lament for the comic year
how on earth can you exclude FF Annual 1 from that list of classics? Surely Namor discovering his Atlantean people and declaring all-out war on the surface world (for the first time!) must count for something? That issue was always problematic for me. For me, the appeal of the Fantastic Four was th...

Re: A lament for the comic year
Ah, the summer specials! Who can forget the big shiny specials on the seaside holiday newsagent shelves? In my memory they represent all that was wholesome and good and bright and hopeful in the world. These days every comic is decompressed, but back in those days those bigger pages were a revelatio...

Re: why is there no British answer to 'MAD?'
Ah, Mad and Krazy. Two of my favourite publications. (Sudden thought: what does that say about me?) The quality of the art on those Mad strips was just inspiring. And it's good to see that Mad is still going strong! http://gizmodo.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2008/08/2723090810_6501c93ae2_o.png http://...

Re: old annuals... garage/jumble sales
I live in a remote part of Scotland, and I bought one annual at a second hand shop two weeks ago, but haven't seen one at a jumble sale for years. I'm glad you posted. Sometimes it seems like everyone else in the world lives next door to a comic shop or in the middle of a city with car boot sales ev...

Re: Reg Parlett on 'Bewitched Belinda' for Whizzer and Chips
That's really interesting. Thanks! A definite Harry Potter thing here - an ongoing story of magical folk trying to live in the muggle world. Complete with close friends and mysterious family history. I wish the dramatic, ongoing side could have been expanded. I'd love to know who wrote which stories...

Re: Reg Parlett on 'Bewitched Belinda' for Whizzer and Chips
It might be Joe McCaffrey, who drew endless piles of Mustapha Million strips, cloning Reg. That's a relief. I am no Parlett expert (though would happily become one!) so take this with a pinch of salt, but as soon as I saw that horse I was shocked. RP's work stands out because he NEVER (to my limite...

Re: anyone with old Marvel reprints want to solve a mystery?
Thanks! I knew one of the heroes on this board would come through! I think the blogger is being generous saying he cannot be sure if the page is original or not. The evidence does seem to stack up very heavily in one direction. But I find it really interesting in its own right. It gives a good excus...
