Re: First all-English superhero (really?)

Funniest comic "news story" of the year! The first-ever comic book starring an all-English superhero - Englishman I think this is comprehensively blown out of the water. I doubt it's even the first one of the 21st century! Englishman #1 - a free digitally-exclusive title You mean a "webcomic"? I kno...

Re: Origins?

Britain did actually have an "obscene publications for children act" (or some such name) bought about to attack US horror and crime comics. So while the US went for self-regulation, but left room for "harder" comics that could become a niche market, the UK simply threatened people with arrest. I won...

Re: Toxic Crusaders

I can remember a platform game called Mick N Mack - Toxic Crusaders, which was released on the Sega Megadrive. Perhaps around that time (though it was possibly a bit later).

Re: A sex change for Thor

I think whoever has the hammer (and who is 'pure' enough to be able to pick it up) is Thor. At least in the original origin story, which is the only Thor comic I have read! The change does smell a bit of publicity stunt, though. Feminism is "in" at the moment, so anything that will be reported on th...

Re: commando issue 1 mint condition

I'd love to win the Euro Millions and "go shopping" for old AP copyrights.

I'd not be a "rebellion type company" though. My revivals would be the same as the originals, not cannibals!

Re: Comic Pet Hates

Talking of PC, I showed my African wife, Sparky (the character as opposed to the whole comic), saying how it is now unacceptable. Much to my surprise, she had a completely different viewpoint. Her take was that those people did exist, they travelled the world and they are being removed from history...

Re: Dreams and Nightmares.

My spy character Eugene Manx was named in a dream. He's a German, though that name doesn't sound particularly German. The dream was also set in Tokyo in the future (2010), and he had a shape-shifting car. But in the comic, I moved him to 1950.

Did they ever do part 2 to Water Cart Rescue? I think I bought the first part in 2005 or 6!

Re: collecting

Haha, I found The Dalek Book from the 60's for a song in a lesser-known charity shop (Blue Cross, or something), and grabbed it up quick. Shame about 20 pages are missing!

Re: What comics did you buy today?

Haha, I was reading a classic car magazine once, where they had to get cars from different decades for £500. Anything from the 50's for that money wasn't going to be much good anyway, but, after drunken ebaying, the one the guy got slowly started to apply the brakes by itself the further he went XD

Re: What comics did you buy today?

Got the 1970 Eagle annual the other day (and The Phoenix, that's picking up again!). The Dan Dare story in it is very strange, time-travelling shape-shifters are trying to sabotage Spacefleet for no reason, Dan and co travel to thier home planet and, erm, frighten them a bit. Then thier base explodes.

Re: when did Easter/April Fools/Halloween/Fireworks issues e

I think it was one of the "preachy", "aware" comics that was around in the late 80's... I think the 'era' roughly lasted from 1987 to 1992. The only thing to come out of them with any longevity was the non-preachy, un-aware Tank Girl, who resurfaced in the Judge Dredd Megazine in the late 2000's and...

My granny always mentions getting a comic called Chicks' Own when she was young. I once showed her some copies of Schoolgirls' Own from the 30's, to which she replied "that was rubbish, wasn't it?"

There's also, oh, most of my blog! http://blog.crystal-knights.co.uk/ With more to come, when I can get round to writing it. Though currently I'm working on an entry about bang-up-to-date issues of My Weekly Pocket Novel. I want to do some detailed reviews of serials in The Boys' Friend at some poin...

Re: collecting

a british 1940s comic book (at a giveaway price) Have you heard of The Wonder Book of Comics? That's fairly easy to get hold of, and is possibly from 1949. It's also pretty big and features some of the top British talent of the era. Mind you, it depends if you consider story papers to be comics, th...
