Re: When did The Happy Days End?

Having looked through my 'Sally' issues I certainly agree about the ones you've attributed to Tom Kerr and the ever-reliable Dudley Wynne (though I do wonder if the former might have collaborated with someone else on 'Golden Cockerel'). I also concur about the especially lovely job R B Davis did on ...

Re: When did The Happy Days End?

Oh yes - that does look much closer than the weekly episodes I've checked (though Dilly's own face seems to be based on a common model).

Re: When did The Happy Days End?

Thanks Goof - that's brilliant, and very useful! I'll have to check it against the issues I own. Which are the issues you've not seen?

As a matter of interest have you compiled similar lists for any other characters or picture libraries?

Re: When did The Happy Days End?

Gosh yes, speaking for myself that'd be fantastic Goof. I really like the art on some of the Sally stories - more so than the Sue Day ones in fact - though I haven't been able to find out much about the artists responsible. You really do seem to have a good eye for that side of things. Incidentally ...

Re: When did The Happy Days End?

To be fair Doughty did illustrate the Terry Brent series in School Friend for several years, though I think he mostly drew for Look & Learn after working on the early issues of Princess.

Re: When did The Happy Days End?

I'm pretty sure the Isobel Rose artist was Cecil Doughty, using the highly detailed style he employed on several excellent strips for the short-lived Top Spot comic; I'm lucky enough to own the original artwork for this first episode and as you can see from the detail below the resolution on those f...

Re: When did The Happy Days End?

I certainly agree that The Happy Days deserves to be included in any series of the Best of British intended for adults - and given a suitable intoduction to put it into a historical context I'm sure there wouldn't be a need to omit any episodes (after all, as far as I remember the series didn't incl...

Re: When did The Happy Days End?

Fascinating stuff Goof. For a time it did seem as though MacGillivray's style was so popular at Fleetway AND DC Thomson that they used him for as many series as they could. Possibly this might have led to something like the American system where the output of certain in-demand artists was maximized ...

Re: When did The Happy Days End?

Incidentally, here's one of the J&SFPL covers for which I have the original art (though I don't own that particular issue or the issue of Princess Picture Library in which the story first appeared). I agree that it could be the work of Peter Kay (I keep meaning to ask David Roach what he thinks), bu...

Re: When did The Happy Days End?

I'd love to see that Tammyfan, but they might have to be a bit selective as a lot of the social attitudes would probably seem outdated today - for example those stories which take a rather jaundiced view of issues like Women's Liberation.

Re: When did The Happy Days End?

I was puzzled by the panels you posted from Sue at Sandybeach myself, though I don't have that issue. I wonder if Macgillivray could have worked with Colin Merrett on it, as the twins' eyes remind me a bit of the latter's style? Well spotted with the credit for Sue's Double Trouble - I do own a copy...

Re: When did The Happy Days End?

That's great Goof, thanks very much! I must admit that Len Potts is a completely new name to me. Thanks also for confirming my suspicions about the Sue Day stories in J&SFPL, though Fleetway did of course commission new covers for the reprints - in fact I own the original art for a couple of them. U...

Re: When did The Happy Days End?

It's a shame Book Palace never published the third volume of their Fleetway Picture Library Index which would have featured David Roach's credits for the various schoolgirls' and romance libraries. I'd love to be able to identify the artists on those Princess Picture Library stories. Also, does anyb...

Re: When did The Happy Days End?

Yes. That panel with Sue returning home from school stood out for me as well, and the rainy sheen on the pavement and street nicely anticipates the kinetic energy of his mature style. But the visual characterisation already seems effortless - not just Sue's changing expressions and that lovely scene...

Re: When did The Happy Days End?

Incidentally, here's the full episode which appeared in the first issue of Princess in January 1960. In my opinion it's a real masterclass in how to introduce a large cast of characters and begin a storyline in just two pages. Although it might not be as spectacular or hard-hitting as some of the cl...
