Re: Hornet free gift.
I suspect being a super boy 1971 DCT-style didn't have much to do with cultivating the life of the mind, developing a wide tolerance, or being up to scratch with the underground music scene of the alternative society. Looks like it's shaped more by the Victorian ethos of muscular Christianity instea...

Re: A strip with a Nag
There were a few other strips about which I wondered whether or not they were original to Jackpot, either because they looked a bit dated for that time, the reproduction quality wasn't so great, or just because their appearances were occasional/inconsistent: Nobby and his Hobbies, Riddle-me Ray, Wh...

Re: British comics adapted into live action film and TV
Captain Pugwash was initially live action in that it was performed and went out live.
ITC's Adventures of Rupert Bear puppet series, from 1969, would also be described as live action.
Andy Capp is out on DVD from Network:

Re: Little Plum
When Iain Chisholm saw what Leo did, he told him he should have informed him first- but Crammonds reaction was pretty inflexible in my opinion! We forget from today's viewpoint that most staff at DCT had to do as told-or else! It was rare for someone (Who I term more `understanding`) such as `Chiz`...

Re: Little Plum
You only have to listen to the 2000AD podcast when John Wagner talks about his start in D C Thomson and you know it was a fairly rigid working environment. When he describes how conservative (small c) the company was then you are surprised at how much innovation the company created in the comics wo...

Re: Little Plum
As I understand it comic sales as a whole were in decline on both sides of the Atlantic from the early 1960s, but Marvel Comics went on to become the single most successful publisher when they finally overtook DC in the early 1970s. Yes, I think they surpassed DC's market share shortly after Kirby ...

Re: Little Plum
It's a sad fact that Mad and Beano simply became more successful than ever after Kurtzman, Baxendale and Reid walked out - thereby seeming to confirm the publishers' philosophy that nobody was indispensable. Virtually the same thing happened when Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby quit Marvel Comics! :( Di...

Re: TV Comic - first Sooty appearance?
Ginger wrote:I used to read TV Comic, it was my favourite for a long time, I had it delivered. But I don't recall Sooty being in it at all. What's the date on that issue, Digi? I suspect it's after I stopped reading it (which I'd say was near the end of the 70s)
Sooty was in TV Comic in the 1950s.

Re: Peanuts
Nope, it was never called Little Folks or anything other than Peanuts (unless you count the way Schulz always subtitled the Sunday comics 'featuring Good Ol' Charlie Brown') That's because he never liked the title Peanuts, of course, and wanted to call it Li'l Folk, but the syndicate insisted on Pe...

Re: The dc thomson bumper fun book
Eight years on... this book's usually set at quite a high price, so I was pleased to win a copy for £6.00 + p&p today. I've been intrigued by it for some time, especially that George Rosie chapter.

Re: Most generous ever free gift in a comic?
I think one of the LEAST generous gifts I can think of was the Tarzan Survival kit bag from Tarzan Weekly #1 in 1977 which was basically a clear plastic bag, not unlike a freezer bag! Hey, now, it was a clear plastic bag with a sheet of paper inside , suggesting things to put in it. Saying it was l...
