Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

You can occasionally find the US edition of Mad in UK newsagents, but it's rare. It's also surprisingly cheap - £3.25 for a $5.99 magazine seems wrong to me (and it was only £2.99 until recently. Bizarre.) That seems just about right to me. The price reflects other magazines, and I doubt that the l...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

Maybe it is time, then, to consider placing comics in different businesses. How about Waterstones? Indie bookshops? Whatever handful of music shops we have left (Viz used to do a roaring trade in Virgin Records)... I'm sure that there are a multitude of untapped locations which would - if they were...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

I think the UK Simpsons comics are aimed at a completely different readership: ... [edit] ... just children, the traditional UK comic audience who get things from supermarkets and newsagents. The supermarkets and newsagents aren't doing even a halfway competent job of shelving things sensibly. I wo...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

Even the Simpsons comic, which does have all that breadth of exposure across all media, went down another 28.1% in sales in the first half of this year. There's other things going on with that title which make any direct 1:1 comparison flawed - the very same strips in The Simpsons are also availabl...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

1. The Dennis cartoons are already a UK/Australia production. Syndication would send them into countries where the Beano might mean nothing. Which is why the importance of the website linkage - which can be done on the DVD itself (just click a link when the disc is in a computer) - is so important....

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

And yet look at what happened to the magazine - in spite of all the spinoffs! Other visibility and ways of distributing? Its been mooted for a long time but noone I know has come up with a reasonable idea. They didn't optimize the exposure properly. Do you have the big blue box with all the Bananam...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

*notes that the edit function is still unavailable* A minor note to that point - I wonder, how many people here have heard of Ministry Of Sound? Of those people, how many have actually been to the club? I'll wager that the majority haven't. The name of the brand is ever-present, and you don't NEED t...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

For the US version, circulation figure is reportedly just over 156,000 (it was over two million in its early '70s heyday). Mad doesn't serve as a good example to say "here's something we can copy" due to the breadth of exposure the franchise (and yeah - it is officially a franchise) has had. A TV s...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

If kids are no longer buying the Beano why not aim it at adults? There's a problem with that idea - retailers. I doubt they would go from stocking Beano-as-it-is to taking The Adult Beano due to the mass of confusion which would come. And how long before someone sells a kid the relaunched title, an...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

DCT weren't exactly immune, but it was the exception. DCT never had it as bad, but it is noticeable that they had more trouble with black blacks. In patches of what was meant to be solid color, there would often be irregular shapes within of slightly different hue. Not that minor repro niggles such...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

That said, a lot of the time the printing wasn't that bad, and personally speaking it rarely spoiled the enjoyment of a comic for me when I was a child. Not sure why, but it doesn't seem to be through runs, but individual issues. Almost as if the titles went to poorer paper for a week, or a few wee...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

But to add to your point, Starlord was done on high quality paper and that has survived very well. Okay. Yes. I know, but keeping a certain degree of quality is essential if current comics are to have any chance. I know *I* prefer something which is packaged nicely. While the conversation has...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

Okay, I gotta speak out about the "newsprint was batter" thing that seems to be coming to the fore... Really? You're all serious? Honestly? When the pages weren't printed wonky, they often had serious bleeding problems, with some pages unreadable (from mid-1960s IPC titles through to the vast majori...

Re: Are weekly comics doomed?

For example, if enough children surveyed all thought that Roger the Dodger was the best drawn strip (perish forbid) in The Beano, and DCT then geared the rest of The Beano in that direction, I think that would be a mistake. But what if the comic's sales suddenly shot through the roof as a result? C...

Re: Marvel to Republish Miracleman...and Conclude it!

Dez would have to speak for the specifics, but there's a scan of memo floating around the interwebs which seemed to separate the Miracleman Big Ben from the character who appeared outside of the story - in, for example, the Warrior Special flip-book with CI. Marvel *should* be able to reprint the st...
