Re: What year did you start reading comics?

Just to be pedantic for a bit, Rupert isn't really a comic in the sense of pics and word balloons - known to me and others as a balloon strip. It falls into the category of a text strip, a very common form in many British comics. You find the same format and variations of it in comics and newspaper ...

Re: What year did you start reading comics?

Re. Rupert, I'm not really surprised that some folk found it scary as youngsters. But I think you saw the Tourtel version. Had you been first exposed to the brilliance of Alfred Bestall I think there would have been a different reaction.

Re: What year did you start reading comics?

I started reading comics just after starting primary school which would have been 1954/5, but haven't a clue what the first comics I read were. I do remember the revelation of seeing, in the playground, someone with a copy of Superthriller - still Foldes Press at the time. I cadged a look and was ho...

Re: The Silent Majority/Minority?

Well Norman, there's a coincidence. A couple of the Americans on CB+ expressed interest in Mr Bellamy's work. They had some examples and wanted more info. I searched the internet and found your excellent site and I'm just on the point of posting the link in case they want a shufty. Thanks for doing ...

Re: What comics did you buy today?

At the risk of boring the socks off everyone else, Reptilicus #1 was released in Aug. 1961 in the USA and presumably a few months later in the UK, given that it would have come over as sea freight or ballast. Miller were still operating, producing not only their own comics and American reprints, but...

Re: What comics did you buy today?

Going back to Reptilicus and the added L Miller 6d sticker, Miller had the rights to distribute Charlton comics in U.K. but after a while - anyone know when? - T&P had the distribution rights and Charlton titles displayed a round T&P stamp with 6p or 7p inside below the T&P. There was also a "real" ...

Re: Braehead Film and Comic con

Well, Unca Col, what always amazes me is that despite ticking off items on my list, my wants list seems to get longer. And some of the folk on here are responsible! I read about titles, companies, that are new to me, or that tickle my fancy, and a note goes on the list  Also, I collect Dell ti...

Braehead Film and Comic con

This weekend the 2 dayer at Braehead Arena. Looking at the guest list I note there are no comics people listed. But I'll go along as I'm meeting some friends and it's usually a good day out. Now if only there will be a few dealers with comics I want to buy.

Re: Phonogram - What are your thoughts?

While I know nothing about W & D or Phonogram, there are some excellent pieces of work by British creators, albeit in US format, so I hope I don't upset Digifiend by mentioning these books. Planetary by Warren Ellis and John Cassaday is as good as it gets. The first 2 vols. of League of Extraordinar...

Re: Middlemarch picture-story in annual?

Thanks all for the info. about classic story adaptations in comics. But Tammyfan mentions wishing there were more of them, and there are. Look & Learn published a lot of balloon strip and text strip adaptations of great stories. The Red Badge of Courage in 8 pages might take a bit of beating :) The ...

Re: Bruce of Scotland - A Junior Press Publication

koollectablz's probably right about the school item and the cover price. But because of the cover I assumed the Bruce story was going to be a comic strip. The Ovaltine ad pages don't show that particular ad or slogan. Nor can I see it on the pinterest page, so I can't get a rough date from that. The...

Re: What comics did you buy today?

Unca Col. writes, "He's already had me searching for this one! It was I that recommended you as the guru for this one. I just can't find anything about it. When Adam posts the information, I hope it's enough to help us both find out something more about this unknown comic." Thanks for the "guru" acc...
