Re: Dandy adventure stories what year they were in..

A few details on Thomson's own 'sporting lordship' the Earl of Boote aka Gorgeous Gus. GG first appeared in the Wizard Nos 1292-1301 in a single series text story with artwork by Pete Sutherland. He next turned up in the pages of Victor in 1961 Nos 29-36. Just by way of clarification, the first app...

Re: The Big Palooka series starring Inspector Ransom.

'The Big Palooka' had also been, before his first strip appearance in Hornet, a story paper character in the Wizard. The character in The Hornet known as The Big Palooka did appear in The Wizard text story paper, as Kashgar correctly states, but not with that nickname. He was introduced as Detectiv...

Re: Les Barton: sad news

Can someone put a scan of it up here please. I don't know whether this will work or not but I am attempting this upload just because of the self portrait, although it does look a bit small on my preview. It is a jpg file at 75dpi and 1200 pixels high, Al's advice if I understand him correctly. lbar...

Re: Les Barton: sad news

Can someone put a scan of it up here please...thanks If nobody else has done so by tomorrow morning, Peter, I will scan the article myself. However, as I have no idea how to upload it to this site I would appreciate some guidance. Is there perhaps some advice already on the site somewhere that I ca...

Re: Les Barton: sad news

As I am aware that a considerable number of you have shown interest on this thread about the passing of the artist Les Barton, it has occurred to me that you may like to know that there is an obituary-cum-appreciation in today's issue of The Guardian . It has been written by his son Bob and is in th...

Re: Indestructible Robot!

More like Good Robot, Bad Robot. It always makes me wonder as the Iron Teacher in The Hotspur of the 70's was very similiar to the Smasher in the Victor of the 60's. 'Good controller, Bad controller' would be nearer the mark, Col. Both the Smasher and the Iron Teacher were only able to function in ...

Re: Indestructible Robot!

All of these Smasher adventures were based on earlier prose stories in the boys' story paper the Wizard from the 1930's. The first serial in The Wizard was simply called The Smasher and ran from issue 439 (May 2 1931) to issue 450 (Jul. 18 1931). The sequel was called Return Of The Smasher and that...

Re: `Buddy` comic 1981-?

This book sounds interesting any more information? Rather than blow my own trumpet, can I get Gordon Howsden of the Cartophilic Society to do it for me? If you type derek marsden into the Yahoo search, the book title will come up. If you click on that, or even on the second entry for it, it will ta...

Re: `Buddy` comic 1981-?

Did you mean to type 1981 Hi steelclaw, No. Regrettably, I did intend to type 1980. My record of this date is clearly wrong, and what is worse is that 1980 is the date I transcribed into my book Free Gifts In The Big Five . You are, of course, correct and I must therefore apologise to you and to al...

Hi Alan,
Kashgar's memory is, as usual, excellent. I can only improve on his post by adding the dates. To be precise, Buddy ran from issue 1 (Feb. 14 1980) - issue 130 (Aug. 6 1983) before amalgamating with The Victor.

I'm spending half a day in Lancaster next week and I would like to visit the 'First Age' comic shop. Could you please tell me where it is, John. I do know the city pretty well but I don't go there too often these days and I haven't previously heard of this shop.

Re: This years reprint books-Help

I used to always find these cutaway features a crashing bore while admitting that I also knew some kids who positively salivated at the prospect of seeing a motor vehicle with it's inner workings exposed. I for one have reason to be grateful, Kashgar, for those cutaways in Eagle. My father thought ...

Re: Got a few pennies Guv'nor?

I'd love really cheap (like 10p/issue cheap) copies of all those tens of thousands of comics I missed. I'm not sure whether tolworthy is presenting an accurate statement here of what he would consider to be a purchasing opportunity that he couldn't possibly turn down, or whether he is guilty of exa...

Re: Rover Book but what year is it?

Good stories inside too, well if the one i have read is anything to go on. Some bandits in the wild west kidnap a sherrif's son, hide on top of a mountain and cut off a town's water supply until the ransom is paid. I don't know the annual story you refer to felneymike, but the inspiration for it al...
