Re: Sadly, Solano Lopez has died - Aged 83

A great man. When I got a lot of early seventies IPC comics at a fair years ago, he seemed to be drawing at least half of the adventure stories, and most wonderfully. Loved "Janus Stark". He has a worldwide reputation, here are some American appreciations: http://www.comicsreporter.com/index.php/fra...

Re: Ooyah! Punishment in the fun comics

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h162/iancockburn/davies.png By the way, Bob Dewar was always one of my favourite cartoonists, and his Thomson stuff was not all sweetness and cutesiness. Plenty of wildness in his run on the Three Bears, or Emlyn the Gremlin. (Above: "Ruff and Freddy" by Bob Dewar ...

Re: Ooyah! Punishment in the fun comics

(Back to the initial topic): If DC Thomson comics emphasized justice and retribution more than its London rivals, its hardly surprising considering the nature of the company, founded and run by a family of hard-line conservative bible-thumping protestants.

Re: Tumba and Rumba

Peter's Pocket Grandpa is also very good by Ron...great use of large and small..using different thin and thick pens....which he also did in The Nibblers.. Ron a great comic artist.. Certainly agree with that last bit! Though Pete's Pocket Grandpa was one of the strips I was thinking of that I didn'...

Re: the three Dinahs

The top artwork in blue is definately by Ron Spencer...here it looks a bit more elaborate than usual, like his 1960s front cover Sparky character work. OK, I take back my skepticism. Ron Spencer now ranks even more highly in my estimation now, what a cartoonist. To sum up: DINAH MITE (Thomson) 1957...

Re: the three Dinahs

Ah I wondered if that was Ron Spencer, too, Thanks!

EDIT: On reflection I'm not sure if I believe you, though. It just doesn't look like his other work of the period to me.

I'm going to start a separate thread about Dinah Mite/Mo in the Dandy section as it's a bit off topic here.

Re: Strips which were given a proper ending

From the Beano dated May 9 1987, the last "Baby-Face" Finlayson of his second run. It was replaced by another small character with prominent nostrils, Little Monkey. I think when I read this strip at the time it was the first time I realised Baby Face was American (I had not yet seen any of the earl...

Re: Scoop comic writer and artist identification

I think the artist there is Tony Harding.

Stark also appeared in Victor in the late 1980s, though I don't know if they were originals or reprints.

Re: Belgian and French kids' comics

Yecchhh, the 3D Movie versions of The Smurfs (now plastered on omnibuses everywhere) and of Tintin look repulsive. It shouldn't be allowed. I miss the days when 3D animation meant Morph or Bagpuss.

Solano Lopez

Though Eddie Campbell was a fan of US comics in the 1960s rather than UK ones, in his blog yesterday he shows us a story he liked by Solano Lopez: (Date 10 July)
