Re: The Topper Beezer Top 100

The many revivals (and the clone-strip "Mutt and Moggy" in the Dandy) indicate that Puss and Boots should never have been discontinued! I wonder if it was due to the editor, or the writer growing weary of it, rather than low popularity? I enjoy almost anything drawn by John Geering, but I think Puss...

British comics/cartoons' contributions to the language

The other 6 parts of the series dealing with American cartoons and comics are interesting too.

Re: The Topper Beezer Top 100

I always liked the Toad In The Hole strip, but the premise doesn't bear close examination - the village has supposedly been cut off for 300 years, yet in every episode someone from T-I-T-H takes a casual stroll into the nearby town. In the example above the old geezer tells his neighbours he's goin...

Re: The Topper Beezer Top 100

I am enjoying this thread and am looking forward to more. As a child in the mid-late eighties, I rarely bought either comic (especially not the Beezer for some reason). I got the Dandy and Beano every week, and my third favourite comic was Buster. If I fancied an extra comic besides the Dandy and Be...

Re: What comics did you buy today?

Yesterday I went to Border books in Todmorden as recommended by Phoenix. I often go to Tod but never noticed it before. Very hard to choose what to buy! I got the 1972 and 1973 Dandy books, 1959 Knockout annual and 1976 Hotspur book. Plus some proper books, because he sells them too. Thank you Phoe...

Re: Beano Annual reviewed in Private Eye!

Missed this at first:
Amusing that Private Eye should dismiss another publication as a "mere fortnightly"

It was better in the old days. They should never have ruthlessly axed Mrs Wilson's Diary.

Re: Beano Annual reviewed in Private Eye!

No wonder Britain's never appreciated comics as much as its European neighbours have when reviews such as this are so unenthusiastic. Private Eye's literary column knows its place, and its place is to throw rotten eggs. I don't think they've ever run a good review. This is in fact one of the best r...

Re: Something Old, Something New

George and the Dragon first appeared on 17th September 1988 (when the Dandy went up to 22p and increased to 24 pages). It was still appearing at least some of the time by April 1990 when I stopped subscribing. Looking for evidence of that strip was the impetus to try and find the greater part of my ...

Re: What comics did you buy today?

Today i got an issue of Football Picture Story Monthly that i happened to see cheap on the front page of Ebay. I'd always assumed it was "like Commando but with Football", but actually it's more like the Fun-Size Beano/Dandy. There's two stories in it, with the inside front cover given over to thre...
