Re: Pete is our sport's reporter

I think you're a bit pessimistic as regards the seventies- they weren't that long ago. Even if the artists themselves are deceased, (mostly the ones who were elderly at the time) someone will know and remember. It's just that there hasn't been a concerted enough effort to collect all the information...

Re: Why are men collecting old girls' comics these days?

I thoguht I'd revive this after another blog a while back on what started the comic collecting bug in people got me thinking: What got some men inspired to start collecting girls' comics? What was the spark that gave the collecting bug? (This could come from men who collect &or women hwo know men w...

Re: Roy Race

Thanks for the tip off Phoenix , Love Roy of the Rovers so I will be buying the old Guardian on my way home, I think the last time I was getting the Guardian regularly Neill Kinnock was the labour leader. Was hoping that there might be a book out for the 60th anniversary but nothing except for Roy ...

Re: Whizzer and chips number 1 and free gift.WOW.phil-comics

Unfortunately, as I understand it, surveys showed that modern readers didn't like adventure strips, - although I'm inclined to think that perhaps they just didn't like the ones they were given. I think you're on to something there. I started reading comics in 1986 and the adventure strips were alre...

Re: KIDS FROM STALAG 41

I'm reluctant to pursue this discussion further, but I wanted to clarify that I was specifically questioning the good taste of latter-day childrens' humour strips featuring Nazis (avowedly dark humour for adults is another matter.) Just because of the shadow of the Holocaust. I have no problem with ...

Re: KIDS FROM STALAG 41

I enjoyed "Schoolditz" as a kid (slightly before my time, but I read it in reprint or in old annuals or both) but in retrospect I find this sort of thing (anything with comedy nazis involved) skates dangerously close to poor taste.... am I oversensitive?

I welcome the corrections, thank you Phoenix. I had a feeling that sentence didn't look quite right. I'm going to France soon so I could do with brushing up on it.

Re: Comics that have disappointed you

:soapbox: The Beezer & Topper when they mutated into a single comic and effectively hammering the nails into their coffins When the merger happened I considered myself too old for that kind of comic but bought the first issue anyway out of curiosity. I was very impressed by it, actually. Lots of gr...

Re: Comics that have disappointed you

Somebody who worked at DCT during the 70s told me and at one point the Beano was outselling the Dandy by a large margin and that was a trend the Dandy never ever reversed even when the content got better in the 80s I knew there was a wide margin between Beano and Dandy sales, but I'd never heard th...

Re: Old Comic Mergers - What If?

Now what would have happened if The Beano merged with The Dandy back when The Dandy had been the more popular? Would have the surviving Dandy been The Beano in all but name by 2014? I doubt it. Firstly, Albert Barnes was a very different editor to George Moonie, so it's doubtful that Dennis the Men...

Au contraire, les BD faisent un très bien moyen pour apprendre une langue étrangère parce qu'il y a tant des images.

Re: Origins?

There were British-originated ones too. From Denis Gifford's "International Book Of Comics" : "By 1960 the publication had passed to the distributors, Thorpe and Porter, whose successful schedule required more titles than Gilberton were currently producing. Acting under license they contracted a Bri...
