Re: Windows 10

Don't I know it! I now have Windows 10 installed on another machine when I'm desperate to read something, but I just haven't got used to it. Because it wasn't designed to be idiot-proof, XP is simpler and more straight forward, and it doesn't insult the user with pop-up commands like "Help me choose...

Re: Windows 10

I'm still using Windows XP, and it works fairly well with this site. Doesn't work with most of the blogs mentioned here, though.

Re: Retro TV

Eartha Kitt had the best Catwoman voice, but she was too short for the part; Catwoman needs to be nearly as tall as Batman. Lee Merriweather looked right, but she didn't have the lunatic edge of Julie Newmar's Catwoman. Newmar was really good at dangerously mad funny characters.

Re: Australian comics

I followed the link to the Panther reprint. Not much info on it, but it's reminded me that the new covers were by Greg Gates. Spiffy art by Moira Bertram on that site. Some of the Australian artists looked like they'd be happier drawing magazine illustrations, but her style is pure comic book and bu...

Re: Australian comics

A friend of mine, Greg Gates, did the art restoration for the Panther reprints, but there may have been new material in the comics as well. Unfortunately Greg's several hundred miles away, and only on social media, so I can't ask him.

Re: Australian comics

Those are great! It's interesting that the Shadow story in Giant Size Comic #8 seems to be set in the UK with frequent mentions of Scotland Yard. These characters really ought to be better-known all over the world - possibly even revived in their own interconnected comic book universe (Earth Oz?). ...

Re: What comics did you buy today?

I have a copy of the Beano Book 1970 again. The jokes are like old friends; rock buns made with cement, a schoolbook titled "Hard Sums", an exploding Hoover, mutilated garden gnomes, and a sweaty terrified elephant leaping six foot in the air at the sight of a mouse.

The Shadow normally had a purple mask and no mouth, Phil.

If you want images of Australian comic covers, just ask. I've got dozens, but very few of the actual comics of this era. They're hard to find.

Re: Australian comics

In Australia, American comics were banned during the war as an unnecessary import, and the demand was met by publishers employing local artists and writers. That was our "golden age", although as you'd expect some of the stuff was pretty clumsy! Then U.S. comics came back and the industry collapsed....

Ferguson Dewar

A nice Ferguson Dewar "Wonderful Island of Yum" painting. Is this from a Playhour annual?

Re: What Comics Do You Get Regularly

I buy Viz when I can find it, but that's not often. Perhaps Australia only gets the surplus stock? Anyway, it's the only British funny you see these days.

Re: Ro-Busters - Valiant Style

This is one of the "It Could Happen" cover that actually seems plausible, although experimental robots designed for disaster areas aren't usually humanoid in shape.

Re: Disney comic covers

Inducks includes the Australian Disney comics, so I've found it very useful. Looking at their listings, Gyro Gearloose was popular in Latin America, and there seems to be a load of G.G. stories unpublished in English. I'm still trying to find the chicken-hatches-a-doorknob Gearloose story in the Aus...

I like that first page. In Biggles' world there are few problems that a well-placed punch in the jaw won't solve!

This seems to have been Pat Williams' big seller, there's plenty of them out there.

Re: Pat Williams

Ron's style didn't suit every kind of historical subject. His medieval pictures were too shiny and fairytale for me. Peter Jackson's paintings looked more convincing because they were grimy as well as colourful .
