Comic-related Clubs in the 1970s

Post by Pensky »

Another post about adverts in comics got me thinking about the clubs that readers of comics in the 1970s could join.

I belonged to the Beano and Dandy clubs (who didn?t?), the Warlord Secret Agent Club, the Bullet Fireball Club and the Plug Sports and Social Club.

With the exception of the Plug stuff, I still have most of these club things actually, membership cards, plastic wallets, badges, etc :)

Were there any more Comic-related clubs around this era?

There was Buster's Birthday Club in Buster in the sixties/ early seventies. I think you got a badge, and they'd print birth dates for prizes or something.

In the 1990's an editor told me there were new laws and restrictions regarding clubs for children (dunno what) so most comics stopped using the term. They used something else for reader participation.

There was also the Warlord Secret Agents that I entered for. Still have the wallet and decoder around. It made me smile to see it again!

As far as I remember, the Tingha and Tucker Club was run by ATV itself. It may have been plugged in TV Comic but I don't think they instigated it. I was a member. We had a membership card, badge, and small red boomerang (which didn't actually return to the thrower but sort of went into a bit of a curve and then you had to collect it from where it fell).
