Answers, like Pearsons, was a newsprint magazine with a pink wraparound cover and was much like Titbits (which had a green wraparound cover). Answers had short stories (one here by edgar Wallace) , jokes, cartoons, and general interest/current affairs articles. Merry Moments was a larger sized comc (quite wide like Puck and Lot-o-Fun) it was the same format as all of them at the time ie full colour funny on he front two text pages, funnies in the centre, two more text pages and then funny strip on the back. I just love the look of them and all the adverts for old sweets and cereals etc. Girls and Boys Cinema were identical in format but one concentrated on the female stars and the other the males. Adult films in both. All of these items are at least good condition.

one thing about Answers (and other magazines of the time) is the free £1000 insurance with each copy. The requirement was that if you are kiled in a train crash while carrying a copy of the magazines you were entitled to £1000. I don't know how you claimed it though.

Thanks for the info. I wish it was easier to see more of the really early 20th century comics.

I've got quite a few old Boy's Own Papers myself from the Victorian era; I think 1893 might be my earliest. The stories always seem to be chapter 6 or chapter 12 though!

I got a few late 1930s issues today, when it was a bulky thick-papered magazine with great colour cover illustrations and nice black and white story illustrations throughout.

I also had issue 33 of the American McSweeney's magazine arrive today. This issue is in the form of a giant American Sunday newspaper with broadsheets and magazines and has a large sized 14 page comics section (by Daniel Clowes, Art Spiegelman, Kim Deitch and others).

It's a lovely creation (scroll down to see the comic section):

A Union Jack from 1917, wartime Sexton Blake action ahoy! There was a few others on sale on ebay too but i lost out on those, so when i saw this one i bid nice and high.

I also got Jan-June 1938 of Girl's Crystal in a bound volume, annoyingly the paper changed sizes mid January, and the older and larger issues "on top" of the smaller ones have gotten tatty around the edges, but they are still readable and the quality of the binding is nice (no pages stuck messily together so you can't read some of the text, for instance). Also the smaller issues which make up most of the volume are immaculately preserved. The stories look quite cool too - adventurous girl pilots and racing drivers!

I nipped into a petite memorabilia fair at the AMC cinema, Manchester where there were some good bargains; quite a few old UK annuals at £1 each, including a number of 1950s Lion ones. My own purchases included the Lion Annuals for 1969 and 70 and Eagle Annual 1966; all near mint and all £1. Also bought some mid-70s Valiants at 50p each, so I'll soon be thrilling to more exploits of Paco and The Potters of Poole Street.

Next fair there is June 19th.

Just bought the Red Lion book The Truth About Wilson for the princely sum of £17.01. Not chuffed about that MUCH!
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

I went to the London Comic Mart yesterday and managed to pick up a few items - spending £415 in the process. Firstly two 26 issue volumes of The Jester from 1910 at £75 each. 25 issues of Boys Cinema from the 1930s.

Beano 363 11/6/49. 366 23/7/49. 380 29/10/49. 385 3/12/49. 483 20/10/51. 526 16/8/52. 532 27/9/53. 543 13/12/53.
Dandy 305 10/11/45. 427 28/1/50. 468 11/11/50. 481 10/2/51. 503 14/7/51. 510 1/9/51. 608 18/7/53. 617 19/9/53.
Radio Fun 615 22/7/50. 620 26/8/50. 627/28/29/30 14,21,28/11 & 4/11/50 (issue has four numbers and dates due to having been disrupted by industrial action). 632 18/11/50. 633 25/11/50. 759 25/4/53. 770 11/7/53.
Film Fun 1565 14/1/50. 1567 28/1/50 1569 11/2/50. 1571 25/2/50. 1579 22/4/50. 1581 6/5/50. 1585 3/6/50. 1589 1/7/50. 1878 14/1/56.
Playbox 918 30/12/44 (Xmas issue)

All at £4-£5 each - very good value.

Most of these comics are in superb condition with white firm pages and I am very pleased with them, a joy to have.

And Millwall have just beaten Leeds 2-0 at Elland Road - Yahoo!

They were great thanks. Had a little read of them Sunday night. The only other issues of Tracy I have are issues 11 and 19 and I got those back in 1979 and 1980 when they first came out. So I find my self 30 years later finally adding to the collection. I just wanted a few sample issues from 1982 and those fitted the bill.

Yesterday i drove rather a long way (and added an hour and a half getting lost!) to pick up volume 2 of the re-launched Boys' Friend from 1902-3. Paid 170 quid for it, mind! Never mind, i can now read the serial "The Sunken Millions" in full!

It appears to have minor 'water damage' in the same places as my 1903-4 volume... maybe it was once part of the same collection, or even the publisher's file copy?

Either way according to a note in the front (not in the later volume) it belonged to a 13 year old boy in 1945. Might be the first time the two volumes have been reunited since then!
