What Comics Do You Get Regularly

Many years ago, I used to travel to Forbidden Planet in Leeds and buy a variety of US and independent comics but now, with ebay, the cost of travelling just isn't worth it anymore.

Many years ago, I would regularly go to my local newsagents and buy Marvel and DC imports. That's before the specialist comic shops took over and besides, the Marvel reprints at the time was in black & white. Not a patch on the Panini/Titan comics you get now.

I'm in the fortunate geographical position of not to having to use Forbidden Planet, thank goodness, as there are indie stores in Glasgow, Falkirk, Stirling and Edinburgh where you can find new and back issue comics. So I go to Bannjaxx in Stirling for the very few American comics I buy nowadays in physical editions. Also, Stirling has the only WHS within easy reach of me, so that's Doctor Who Comic and TFTT taken care of on the same visit.

(and by the way, anyone who's interested, there are 2 different Forbidden Planet chains, the one in Glasgow and some other branches being run by different people than the London one. This could have changed in the last few months, but I don't believe it has. Companies house shows the list of current and past directors.)

That's been the case for years. When their business partnership broke up, both Nick Landau and Mike Lake retained the use of the name 'Forbidden Planet'. Nick's shops have the rocket logo, and Mike's are called Forbidden Planet International with a different logo design. FPI also own some shops that retain their own names, such as Nostalgia and Comics in Birmingham. (And Brum also has the rival FP a short walk away.)

FP are also tied in with Titan Comics.

Yes, that's right, Lew. And the history of the Edinburgh, non Nick Landau, branch can be traced right back to The Science Fiction Bookshop in West Cross Causeway, where one of the current directors of the non Landau chain started on his comics retailing career.
I still remember with some enjoyment being responsible for Mr. Landau being asked to leave a packed DC retailer meeting in L.A., having been primed to do so by DC management, as he was both a retailer and supplier, being at the time, one of the principal suppliers of comics to aka in Glasgow as well as most comic shops in the UK. A big no-no as far as those meetings and the retailers present were concerned

Right now the only title I get regularly is 'Johnny Red.'

The exchequer is facing challenging times which means belt-tightening etc etc.

Not many. Doctor Who Comic and, now, Tales from The Tardis are the only British ones and these two, despite being created by number of British creators, are reprints of American titles. I do order a few Archie digest comics every month from a local comic shop.
Apart from that I occasionally try an American title. For example, yesterday I picked up #1 of the new Rocketeer limited series.

Titan's direct sales Doctor Who comics may be designed primarily for the US market, but I'd dispute classifying them as American comics given that Titan are based in the UK and the comics produced over here.

As far as what I'm currently buying goes: 2000 AD, Commando, Judge Dredd Megazine, all Titan's Doctor Who titles, Johnny Red, Doctor Who Magazine, and about twenty American monthly titles, mostly from Marvel or Dynamite Entertainment, including Marvel's Star Wars line.
