Christmas 2016 - What Did You Get for Xmas?

Post by SID »

Well that time of year is rapidly approaching again.

So what is everyone hoping to get (comic related wise)?

For myself:

The Dandy Annual 2017
Dan Dare - The 2000AD Years Book 2
A Trigan Empire graphic novel

Also nostalgia-based, but not comic related, a set of the new 50th Anniversary Action Men (well the ones that have been released so far).

Last year it was a book on Bamforth saucy seaside postcards,

This year it's the book: 25 years of VIZ,,,I already have it, it is hidden away until the 25th.

I have done exactly the same for The Dandy Annual 2017. ;)

I forgot to add the Dan Dare audio adventures from Big Finish.

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

A few years back, I got the deluxe HISTORY OF THE BEANO for Christmas----later on, my well-intentioned sister unwittingly got me a second copy in error.

I put the brand-new double copy into a local charity shop---it wasn't unsold for very long!

Did you tell your sister or was it kept a secret?

Something similar happened to me and I kept my original purchase secret, particularly as my brother had been so excited about getting it for me.

I still never told her because she meant well!

Morally it was better putting it into the charity shop, though.

But yes sometimes it is better not to offend the feelings of those giving gifts.

With my brother, I pretended that I liked it so much (it was a Dennis the Menace biscuit figurine) that I bought another.

Not a complete lie as I did like it and didn't mind having two.

PS I got that same Bamforth book (used to collect the postcards when I was younger).

My view, Rab, is that it is always better not to offend them, wouldn't you agree?

You are absolutely correct, Mr Phoenix-Rising!

SID: yes the Bamforth book is a most satisfactory addition to my comic-related books, I still absolutely love this facet of British cartooning.

Used to enjoy collecting the postcard each time I visited the coast.

I also had their calendar.

I once considered starting up a thread on saucy postcards on this site, but I bottled out!

Even in Brighton and Blackpool, it is getting harder to find these postcards----there is always a huge market on e-bay, of course!

The few comic cards I saw in Blackpool this year were sadly not in the same league as the Bamforth artists of times gone by, and the only place I saw them was on a spinner rack at the North Pier. Other shops, if they stocked them at all, only had photo cards.

No doubt instant texting and picture messaging has replaced the old postcard for most people now.

Charles Grigg's Bamforth cards were the ones I was interested in and only when I went to the coast. Somehow getting them from eBay wouldn't be the same.

Not all Donald McGill's postcards were saucy. See below for one I bought five years ago from the McGill postcard museum in Ryde on the Isle of Wight. I will admit that I also bought quite a few others that I wouldn't feel comfortable posting.

I get cash from some people - so it'll be spent on the next volume of Judge Dredd: The Case Files...
