Re: Bill Holroyd - give him his dues.
Great artist, but does anyone on here remember his very later work: I definately recall seeing a DANDY comic Library of the mid-80s in which his usually-confident line was noticably shaky and jagged: wish I bought this one in reterospect: I only ever witnessed this noticable deteriation once: perhaps the DCT 'top-brass' pensioned him off after this: who knows?
In all likelihood, this was down to the natural ageing process, and in no way does this retract from the unmistakable style from this very talented DCT funnies artist who was 'part and parcel' of his era. [familiar to literally millions of readers].

and with all due respect to Steve, Nick and the others who have drawn Brassneck since - sorry, but he's never been the same!
Re: Bill Holroyd - give him his dues.
In later years Bill suffered with arthritis in his hands which accounted for the rather shaky line of his later DCL efforts.
Sorry Col, Bill didn't draw 'Star Spangled Banger' but you were close if propinquity counts. It was the work of his brother Albert.

So close, yet so far. I take it that Albert also did the true story covers then. However, was it Bill or Albert that drew Slim Jim, The Fighting Cook?Kashgar wrote:In later years Bill suffered with arthritis in his hands which accounted for the rather shaky line of his later DCL efforts.

I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

All the True Life covers and Slim Jim were also the work of Albert Holroyd. From memory I can't think of anything that Bill drew specifically for Victor although it may contain one or two of his reprinted feature pages from Adventure.

While I now know that they are brothers, I am very surprised that their styles are so similar.Kashgar wrote:All the True Life covers and Slim Jim were also the work of Albert Holroyd. I love the use of the word "bonce". Apologies for dark areas on scans but I bought a new HP scanner this year and it has this strange fault. I raise the brightness and contrast to counteract it.

I see the next story was a fireworks number...
what I like about Bill is how he makes every character in each panel doing there own thing...like the small characters laughing in different poses..learnt a great lesson for my own cartoon work..
It does remind me of Perils of Penelope pitstop and the anthill mob a bit..;0)
