Did John start in comics with Sparky..Puss and boots..Pansy Potter.or was it earlier.....

The earliest work of his I recognized was Puss and Boots which started as a half page strip in Sparky in 1969. But DC Thomson tend to start new artists out "ghosting" established strips first, so it's likely he drew other strips before Puss and Boots.

Thanks Lew......I wonder what he did before comics.......?

I hope DC Thomson will start to talk about John Geering in one of there books or comics.......he was one of the best. ..

Among other things, John was an actor, and had an early role in Coronation Street as a relative of Elsie Tanner's (may have been her son).

He was also instrumental in the creation and design of Ken Dodd's Diddymen.

He was great at wacky characters........did he draw them in Tv Comic...in the late 60's?

I once wrote to Jim Richards, who then edited the 60 years books (and may still do so for all I know!) on that very subject. He said:

I love to see a book like that........

With the recent Dandy comic showing off the artist profiles..there maybe a chance...I think it would be good if young people knew the names of these artists..

Really? I never knew that! Can't find any info on the net about it. Probably a small role, rather than Elsie Tanner's son I imagine. He'd be 19 when Corrie started in 1960 but Elsie's son Dennis Tanner was played by Philip Lowrie. Although I wouldn't be surprised if she had other kids "out of wedlock", (Ee, brazen as owt that girl.

) but it'd be a major storyline so he'd have been credited somewhere.

I am a big John Geering fan...though I did not know his work until he drew some strips for Marvel UK 's The Real Ghostbusters.
When I first visited The Beano office, Euan Kerr showed me some Artwork that John Geering had done for the animated film The BFG, it was a perfectly drawn and coloured overhead view of a country village.

Maybe it's just me but every time I see the name I split it after the "You" and put the rest of the name together as a sutname.

I feel sory for him if he's had to put up with this all his life but to be involved in kids comics with a name like that has got to have added to his grief...

LOL no as far as I know its his real name - Euan is a Scottish name and is pronounced Ewan ("U-an" not "Wan")) - which actually looks worse written down - Soory thats taken the fun out of it a bit.

John Geering was always a childhood favourite of mine. I was always amazed by the clean, well-constructed artwork of Bananaman, Smudge, etc...

I remember being impressed with the way he drew hands and general posture.

More recently, I have noticed his influence (as well as Ken Reid's - another obvious childhood favourite) on Ken H Harrison's depictions.

I remember writing to DC Thomson saying how much I liked his work, they must have passed my comments on to him because I received a nice card from his wife thanking me for my admiration of him, it wasn't long after that I heard the sad news of his death. I still have the card but is in storage with tons of my comics. At the time I was sending strips into DC Thomson and tried my hand at writing a Puss 'n' Boots script but it was rejected.
