It had to come some day. Over on Kev Sutherland's Facebook is the sad news that Leo has passed away.

I'm sorry to hear it, but at least he did have a pretty good run.

So long Leo! :( It's desperately sad to hear of his passing but - as Comixminx says - he did at least enjoy a much longer retirement than Dudley Watkins, Davey Law and Ken Reid. It's comforting to think of them all being reunited at last for one great 'slap-up feast' in the sky!

I wonder if The Guardian will carry an obituary for him tomorrow. They have acknowledged his birthday for many a long year.

There will be an obituary in The Guardian at some point.

Leo passed away on Sunday night, and the news reached some of us on Monday, but Leo's family requested that we not say anything publicly until all his relatives had been informed, which we naturally agreed to out of respect. Tributes have been written and will start appearing on websites and blogs from Thursday.

He was the greatest purveyor of comic Anarchy Britain ever produced and he swept almost all that occured in the funnies market before him in his considerable wake.

An all time great! He produced some of the best illustrations and strips to ever grace British comics. My personal favourites being the large Banana Bunch pages in the Beezer.

Leo just got a mention on Radio 2 news : looks as if the more mainstream soundbites will only likely mention his D C Thomson characters.

It is very sad, but a good innings from the great man. Leo was my biggest reason for reading and collecting comics. I owe him everything as he shaped my life the first time I read Willy book 1 way back then, every comic I have read since is because of that. I will take it off the shelf tonight and read it again for the thousandth time. RIP Leo - a king amongst men.

Basically, the press are using the same source, word for word, but it's heartening to see Leo receiving so much coverage.

It's hard to believe that that great purveyor of comic anarchy is no more but then, it's equally hard to believe that he was ever old either. Leo's vibrant, glory days which came outside the living memory of many who frequent this site, had such an influence on the generation of artists who came after him that his work does not date and, if providing laughter in an often weary world counts for anything then Leo Baxendale counted for more than most. Goodnight Leo.

Sad to hear about the passing of Leo Baxendale. A legend in British comics those covers he done for Wham will forever stay ingrained in my memory.
