Better quality Commando.

Pocket-sized war 'comic' that has been around since 1961 and is still going strong.

Better quality Commando.

Post by stevezodiac »

Saw the latest Commandos in WH Smiths today and when I picked one up I noticed it was a lot thicker than usual. Turns out they now have a stiffer cover and better quality, thicker pages. I bought the two new stories. I noticed they now have the publication date on the back cover which was 28th April.

According to their Facebook page, the paper is 60gsm and the cover is 150gsm. I think it's whiter paper inside too. There's a picture on their Facebook of someone's 3500 copy collection. He'll need bigger shelves!

Yes that's exactly what struck me when I picked them up - I thought "Hello if this isn't a 150gsm cover then I'm a monkey's uncle and, I may be wrong but would swear this paper is 60gsm, whatever the hell that means." I suppose the price will go up shortly. All we need now is a single colour (see other posts on that subject where the idea was seriously pooh-poohed). To wit: "Steve I have seen your suggestion of making Commando in colour and must respond with a resounding double pooh."

:offtopic1: I know it's way off-topic, but gsm means grams per square metre. And the lower the number normally means the lower the paper quality. So 60 gsm is posh newspaper whereas 150 gsm is nice and glossy.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

Or to put it in less technical comicy terms, a 64-page Commando is now as thick as a 96 page Boys' Friend / Sexton Blake library used to be!

I must admit I like what DCT has done to Commando since I last got my regular issue a number of years ago. One of the reasons why I re-subscribed. 8)
