Who drew this?

Discuss all the girls comics that have appeared over the years. Excellent titles like Bunty, Misty, Spellbound, Tammy and June, amongst many others, can all be remembered here.

Who drew this?

Post by stevezodiac »

This caught my eye from the property section of the London Evening Standard. Apparently designer Debbie McKeegan bought some 50s and 60s Marvel comics and used images from them to print onto items of furniture like cushions, blinds etc. Obviously my first thought was who is the artist of this picture. The hands certainly look like the work of Carmine Infantino but the face doesn't - that looks more like Irk Novick. Anyone who can say for sure? Those romance comics had some nice stylish work in them. I'd collect them if I had the space.

It's definitely inked by Vince Colletta whoever did the pencils.

Yes its obvious now, Vince had a reputation for erasing a lot of the background pencils to make his job easier. I'll put it down as Infantino/Colletta but then that reminds me that Infantino never worked for Marvel in the 1960s. Even more puzzled now.

Definitely Colletta inks, but it's actually pencilled by Jack Kirby. It was originally printed in the November 1962 issue of Love Romances (see below) but Marvel reprinted the artwork with different words only a couple of years ago. Infantino did work for Stan Lee during the 1950s but I'm pretty sure he'd jumped ship by the time this appeared:

What's the original image printed on? If the bike in the bottom left is to scale, the image must be massive. A duvet cover perhaps?

Possible answers.
a. Paper
b. Why could the image not be on a rectangular postage stamp? It would still be to scale.
c. A cushion cover?
