Reprinted stories in Princess Mk.2

Discuss all the girls comics that have appeared over the years. Excellent titles like Bunty, Misty, Spellbound, Tammy and June, amongst many others, can all be remembered here.

Reprinted stories in Princess Mk.2

Post by philcom55 »

While IPC seem to have disposed of most of the artwork from Misty, Tammy and Jinty there DO seem to be a number of surviving pages from the final issues of the second Princess, when that title briefly reverted to the standard newsprint format before combining with Tammy in April 1984. As I seem to remember Princess featured a number of reprinted serials during those weeks I'd be interested to know if anybody can recall which they were, and where they originally appeared, since this may now be the only way to acquire any actual artwork from Tammy or Jinty.

As a matter of interest here's a nice cover I picked up quite cheaply a while ago featuring the first episode of 'The Saddest Dog In Town' by Eduardo Feito - one of my favourite artists from the period (though I don't think this was a reprint).

Hmm. I don't know enough about Princess Mk 2 myself to give any info, and Catawiki doesn't seem to list it. Perhaps Tammyfan will be able to shed some light, or someone else.
jintycomic.wordpress.com/ Excellent and weird stories from the past - with amazing art to boot.

I know Princess reprinted "Stefa's Heart of Stone" and "Horse from the Sea" from Jinty, and "The Dream House" from Tammy.

Thanks Tammyfan, they certainly sound worth looking out for (I think I remember seeing a few Comos pages). The Dream House is particularly creepy: do you know who the artist was?

Mike White, I believe.

On the Jinty site there is an entry saying some original artwork from Horse from the Sea had survived: https://jintycomic.wordpress.com/2016/0 ... s-arising/

In fact, it is due to the reprint in Princess that the artwork did survive.

I think I've got the issue with that artwork.

Nice to know some artwork did survive. I imagine original Misty artwork would command huge prices, but I only know of one surviving piece from her.

Weirdly, a lot of material from the earlier issues of this version of Princess was saved - but in the form of the hand-coloured photographic proofs from which the comic was shot. Presumably the original black & white line art was simply thrown away to save on storage costs!

Princess II started off with a lot of colour pages and photo stories, and her pages were printed on more expensive paper than the more typical newsprint that Tammy was printed on. And she had fewer pages (presumably to make her more economic as she was more expensive to produce). But towards the end she was being printed on the same newsprint as Tammy, she had dropped her photo stories and colour pages, and was reprinting old serials (not a good sign for a new comic). Sounds like bad sales and cost-cutting measures to match.

Here's the cover to the second issue of the revived Princess, with most of it's overlays and paste-ups still attached (though I think the original artwork has been included in this case). Bodged together pages like this were almost being given away a few years ago. I'm not sure who the artist on the Incredible Shrinking Girl was, but it looks a bit like John Woods to me.

Incidentally I think the new Princess was launched in response to a national outpouring of Dianamania. I've even got a print of her that IPC purchased from a photo library to use in one issue!

That artist is Hugh Thornton-Jones according to our information - he drew a number of Jinty stories too.

The Incredible Shrinking Girl would not have looked too out of place in a Thomson girls' paper, although it does feel a bit like a filler. For those who don't know this five-episode story it is about the vicissitudes experienced by Clare Humphreys, an enthusiastic swimmer whose family don't have enough money to take her abroad like all her schoolfriends. When some women come to the door market testing some new products Clare accepts them because they are free. As she is hungry she makes a meal from some of the contents of some of the packets. Indeed she is so hungry that she doesn't notice that she is spraying shaving cream onto the food. She falls asleep after eating some, but when she wakes up, her mother and her sister Susie are astounded to see Clare getting smaller and smaller.

She gets so small that in the local hospital they don't have equipment small enough to deal with her. She is dressed eventually in doll's clothes.

Clare starts accusing her father of making money out of her. He denies it but says they would be mad to turn down all the offers as they will be needing the money to pay a top specialist. Film rights have already been sold to a big American studio!!

Clare's parents think a cat has eaten her. The contract holders are furious. Meanwhile Clare continues to shrink. She has to evade ants, and lands on a fly's back. Then Susie hears the fly and gets ready to spray it.

The fly spray reacts with the chemicals in the food samples and Clare returns to her normal size.

Princess had a well-remembered photostory about a disagreeable man who gets turned into a talking rabbit.
