Spam postings

Post by AndyB »

Hello folks

Earlier I deleted a spam post made by a spam user - unfortunately, we can't stop this from happening very easily, even with e-mail validation and image verification.

If you see any inappropriate posts and they haven't been deleted within 24 hours, pm Al, colcool007, grumpyoldman or myself. Don't reply to the spam posts - it only means we'll have to delete yours to make any sense!

Cheers!

I did reply to the post in question, Andy, but later withdrew it: I refrained from using indecent images/bad language, however....on this occassion, at least!

Somehow I think another may have gotten through. Anyone bought anything? No? Quelle surprise!

I wonder if maybe you are able to moderate their first post?

Are we at war? First Russia, now France. I hadn't realised that I had upset people to that extent.

this sort of thing plagues many other sites, but why this one has been targeted recently is beyond me.

I came onto the forum in the early hours, probably shortly after our unwelcome spam visitor, and he had posted at least once in every section... people like this make me sick!

edit: in fact the posts of 'OICildboubreele' are still evident in many of these - I hope he/she/it is immediately banned and barred from further posting, and these unwelcome intrusions deleted?

The latest spammer (OICildboubreele) has been banned, had all their posts (11 in total) deleted; had their IP address (194.8.75.145) banned and had their email address (*@2010go3.biz) banned.

We'll see if this will have any effect.

Failing that, I'll revert back to the old days for a while, where new members have to get their application verified by an Email from a Moderator.

Apologies to anyone who got offended by these dodgy posts, but I think we're all made of stern stuff. Don't they realise we've been subjected to the pranks of Dennis the Menace and Roger the Dodger for the past 50+ years, so this is mere bagatelle!

I imagine this is an automated "netbot" which targets loads of forums, not an actual person sitting there individually spamming. Not that it excuses them in any way of course, and it's still a human behind the program.

Spam used to be a massive problem on my forums, hence why I had to close them. Good luck in your fight against the masses!!!

Sorry colcool, it wasn't that kind of spam. I only read a few headlines from the 'View New Posts' button and they seemed to be of the 'start you own handbag business'

(I kid thee not - handbags!)

So, if it's only handbags, presumably we don't need to bother surrendering.

The application verification as suggested by Al is the way to go.
