WHO ARE YOUR TOP 5 BANDS/MUSICIANS?
WHO ARE YOUR TOP 5 BANDS/MUSICIANS?
This can't be a poll as there are only 14 options in a poll and that would be limiting.
This post is inspired by Steve Zodiac who mentioned in a different section his two favourite bands.
I will start by saying I am a musician (amateur but one BBC video and one punk tape that sold quite well in Germany).
I love heavy metal, punk, blues, jazz ....frankly I love all forms of music when they are done well.
My top 5 bands are:
1:The Beatles
2:The Beach Boys
3:The Rolling Stones
4:Led Zeppelin
5:Pink Floyd

Re: WHO ARE YOUR TOP 5 BANDS/MUSICIANS?
Although I said the Beach Boys are the second greatest band after the Beatles they wouldn't be in my own top five favourites. Based on repeated listening I'd choose
The Beatles
The Doors
The Who
Pink Floyd
Tyrannosaurus Rex/T. Rex
My genres of choice are Psychedelia, punk, goth, blues and classic rock.

Joy Division
Band of Holy Joy
Durutti Column
Trembling Blue Stars
Blueboy (the Sarah Records version)
....that said, the Sisters of Mercy and the Smiths were key to my social life and the Razorcuts wrote my favourite song. I suppose the Fall and the Blue Aeroplanes should be in there too. The more I list, the more that occur to me.

Re: WHO ARE YOUR TOP 5 BANDS/MUSICIANS?
Favourite album by each group:
The Beatles - Revolver
The Doors - Strange Days
The Who - Quadrophenia
Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Tyrannosaurus Rex/T. Rex - Beard of Stars
I was a mod around late 70s early 80s. Went to the March of the Mods gig at the Lyceum in 1979 featuring Secret Affair, Madness, Purple Hearts, Selector etc. Saw the Jam at the Rainbow and saw Squire most Saturdays at the Wellington Waterloo. In 1993 I saw 60s band Creation at the Mean Fiddler. Also went to gigs featuring My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Bolt Thrower, Monster Magnet, Arthur Lee of Love, Amon Duul II, David Bowie (Milton Keynes), Smashing Pumpkins (not my cup of tea), Soundgarden. Think I saw Tool as well, have ticket somewhere.

Re: WHO ARE YOUR TOP 5 BANDS/MUSICIANS?
Well I was waiting and hoping that more members may post here but just going to go with everything above now and my reactions.
FIRSTLY: I am NO LONGER COMFORTABLE with my own top 5 !!!
I was so SAD when BRIAN WILSON DIED that I think I elevated the Beach Boys to a higher position than I would normally have placed them.
Don't get me wrong, they are a band I love and I own all the 60s and 70s albums and some of the latter but .....
They shouldn't be at number 2 in my list.
Also...I don't understand why I didn't include the Velvet Underground.
Anyhow....
Not editing, just going to give my thoughts on you fine folks' choices....

Re: WHO ARE YOUR TOP 5 BANDS/MUSICIANS?
The Doors are one of my favourite bands of all time and when I had long hair and was thinner my nickname at college was "Jim".stevezodiac wrote: ↑14 Jun 2025, 09:21Although I said the Beach Boys are the second greatest band after the Beatles they wouldn't be in my own top five favourites. Marc Bolan is an absolute genius and I love TRex.
Re: WHO ARE YOUR TOP 5 BANDS/MUSICIANS?
Adam, MUSE are absolutely fantastic and "Black Holes and Relevations" is one of the best albums ever made.
Madness...I LIKE THEM but not in my top 200.I think their later albums were often better than their earlier ones although their hit singles in the 70s/80s were a highlight of my youth.
AC/DC....SIMPLY ONE OF THE BEST BANDS EVER!
Absolutely love ACDC.
There are 4 albums that I really had to track down as tricky to get:
High Voltage (Aussie Version)
TNT
Dirty Deeds (Aussie Version)
Let There Be Rock (Aussie Version)
If you want copies just ask in PM ,for free obviously as I made copies at work before I was made redundant (New Job starts next Monday ) and cost me zero to do so.

I would certainly include Joy Division/New Order (frankly I see it as same band) in my top 20.
I have to be completely honest about the rest of your list and state that I have heard of them all but know little about them.
You also mention 5 other bands ....THESE I KNOW!!!!
The Sisters and The Smiths were also key to my life when I was at college and I would certainly put The Smiths into my top 15/maybe top 10.
I loved Mark Smiths' Fall and definitely a top 40 band for me.
Blue Aeroplanes....."Bury Your Love Like Treasure" is ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER WRITTEN.
Razorcuts....Great band....Is your favourite song "Jade" ?????

So going by my original list which I am uncertain of,these are my favourite albums of the groups.
The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour (I KNOW lol this was initially not a UK album but just a USA album but was released officially here in 1976 and is the lost 13th album)
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (Simply one of the best ever records of all time)
Rolling Stones - Exit on Mainstreet
Pink Floyd - Meddle
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti

Re: WHO ARE YOUR TOP 5 BANDS/MUSICIANS?
On the subject of musical genius I'd include Jeff Lynne of ELO. He still makes ELO albums but nowadays they are solo projects with Jeff playing every instrument. I got into the Move/ELO in the early 70s. Also agree about the Velvet Underground.

Re Pet Sounds, I have the cd but don't think actually listened to it. Where would you place Forever Changes by Love? Better than Pet Sounds? I think it's probably the most perfect lp ever.
Re: WHO ARE YOUR TOP 5 BANDS/MUSICIANS?
No, "Snowbound". First time I heard that, my heart just stopped.jim244 wrote: ↑17 Jun 2025, 02:30Hi Starscape.starscape wrote: ↑14 Jun 2025, 13:48Joy Division

I think I must have been in the only band that did a cover of a Blue Aeroplanes song - a rather lively version of Sylvia Plath's 'The Applicant'. Great on record, but unbelievable live. Even though the guitarist hadn't heard the song before, it became his favourite after a couple of plays.
Talking of playing live, we used to belt out 'The Fan & The Bellows' by the Chameleons. There's a bit in the song (sometimes missed) where he shouts 'not me' at the top of his voice. First time I did that, I got such a primal scream therapy. Left me shaking. Never really experienced anything like that since.
