Sweet FA!

Post by miklewis7 »

Hi, this is my first post, i've joined because I am trying to find an old comic I remember, its called "Sweet FA!" and it was a football based adult comic of the Viz mould of humour.

I think it was around in the mid nineties and was only around for a few years.

Does anyone remember it for a start? More importantly does anyone know where I can buy/download copies?

thanks for any help I get.

Mike

Hi Mike,

eBay is your best bet without resorting to downloading. I don't think they'd be very expensive. None on there at present but they do crop up occasionally.

Good comic to work on. I drew various strips for it.

I can't remember the names now as it was quite a while ago. One was about a football club chairman I think. Tight*rse or something.

Yeah, I remember it & the Tightarse strip where he tries to increase capacity by sawing the seats in half!

Other strips I think were in it were:

Gassa - sent up of Gazza, but with a winf problem.

Football Bimbo - sending up Karren Brady (I think inspired a lot by a fly on wall documentary on her first months as MD of Birmingham City, where she carried a little dog with her - the doc didn't do Karren's image any favours I remember...)

One about a Sunday/pub football team - one character looked like a cross between a bloodhound and Curly from The Three Stooges.

There was another footie alternative comic called "The Onion Bag" out in 1995-96 - all I remember on that was it had a free cassette of football songs including the Sheffield United one and ones against Manchester United to the tune of "Robin Hood".

I heard these at a time when I was living in Newcastle, when they were 12 points clear and blew the title...

Sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead but I found it from a google and I wanted to post something here.

I grew up reading Sweet FA and Tightarse was my favourite strip. I was a long suffering Spurs fan during the Alan Sugar era and this one struck a cord. Another good one was a Roy of the Rovers spoof called Danny McGuire; there was a particular one called The Player that Money Wouldn't Buy which was a satirical commentary on prima-donna players getting big money moves by acting up; this player (Bertie) was taking it to the point of passing the ball to the opposing team (if it was a club he wanted to move to) and practically giving them gift-wrapped opportunities to score; he was rewarded by a transfer to the local vicarage where the vicar needed someone to cut the grass. I wish Christian Eriksen had got a deal like that instead of Inter Milan.

I'm delighted that one of the artists for the comic posted here. It's an honour to meet you, sir.

Sadly Lew got into an argument with another member and quit this site. Since then the number of posts has reduced. We all wish Lew would come back. The offending member left too so no reason for Lew to stay away.
