DC Thomson creators inteviewed this coming Sunday

This Sunday (May 10th) several artists and editors from DC Thomson will be appearing at the Bristol Comic Expo. I've been asked by the Expo organizers to interview those Dandy/Beano greats at the Ramada Hotel (Park Room) at 1.00pm. (Lasts an hour.) After a few introductory questions I'll be throwing it open to the audience so come along and ask those burning questions!

Thanks to those who attended the panel discussion yesterday. (Did any regulars here attend apart from Kev F?) Thanks also of course to the fine array of panelists Hunt Emerson, Morris Heggie, Nigel Parkinson, Laura Howell, Duncan Scott, and Gary Northfield for providing such interesting answers to my mainly mundane questions. Champions all, with a true passion for comics.

Big thanks to you, Lew, for being a cracking chairman. Everyone was on top form and the hour flew past. I had a bit of a croaky voice apparently and my wife thought I was going to burst into tears at any minute.

("Northwood"? Blimey. Well, it makes a change from people telling me how much they enjoyed my Shaun the Sheep story in the Beano ;) ).

Agh! I did it again! Sorry Gary! Will edit my previous mistake.

You know, Lew - for someone who speaks with great authority on almost every exact detail in this forum, and rightly insists on making sure that accuracy prevails, you ain't half prone to some cracking bloopers.

Sunday was the 11th, by the way. No wonder there was no-one there when I arrived. :P

You're right Steve! Ah well.

That said, the 10th saw Nigel Parkinson, Wayne Thomson and others sketching at the DC Thomson stand so hopefully anyone who turned up that day would have enjoyed it. Lots of other comic artists/writers there too of course, plus the latest issues of Crikey and Omnivistascope, loads of new UK comics, creators from the Eagle Award-winning Spectacular Spider-Man UK comic, original art to look at, many panel discussions.... something to please everyone I'd have thought. It's a shame that most people here decline to attend. I can appreciate that distance is a problem for some, although part of the fun of attending a Con is to travel to somewhere new.

I really did intend being there, Lew, and had made plans accordingly, but a house full of projectile vomiters put paid to all schemes at the last minute - including my plot to disguise myself with a heavy beard and glasses (over my own beard and glasses) and heckle you and the DCT mob at the Q&A session.

Who's sorry now, as the song goes?

Did anyone record it for posterity? And if so, is there any chance of a webcast for us that are a bit further away than the coast of the UK?

I was there, it really wasn't that exciting a panel. The panellists didn't quite outnumber the audience. Not quite. Nigel Parkinson had some nice stories about who he shared a studio with once, Morris Heggie was entertainingly self effacing about some of the comics he's worked on, a few people tried to say good things about The DFC without actually having seen a copy, and the rest was nice things about nice comics. Oh and a kind kid in the audience asked when there would be any more of my serials appearing in The Beano (Morris was able to answer that there might not be any for a while).

We clashed with the Gay Comics panel, so maybe that's where all the kids were.

I had some nice things to say about the DFC, but then I had seen a copy of a dummy, plus I'd been along to the office and seen the walls plastered with pages of upcoming artwork.

They know the routine. Look for my name hidden somewhere on every page. If it's not there don't bother. (Though I'll just bet every issue in a plastic bag actually sells best doesn't it?)

Recycling old comics won the war, dontcha know. The old recycling adverts where a lot better then too, today's ones are rubbish "nanny state"-looking warnings. Commando could do with some burly sergeant shouting about recycling instead, for instance. And Dennis could threaten to menace anybody just throwing old issues in the bin...
