VAT, Customs Duty, Excise Duty, Import Duty

Post by Hawkeye »

I'm thinking of buying an old childrens book from the USA, cost around £250, and trying to find out how much extra I'll have to pay by way of VAT or Duty. I've been trying to read up on this via Google but I'm even more confused now than I was to start with.

There seem to be so many conflicting ideas about what you have to pay and what not.

Anyone got and advice please?

You may find the calculator on this website helpful:

https://www.gov.uk/trade-tariff

It's not that easy to use, but it does deliver a reply. This seems to suggest that there's no import duty from the US in this case, but as the tariffs have been changing every few days, it may not be up to date.

There's a theoretical liability to VAT on the value plus shipping costs, but as books are zero rated, presumably there is none in this case.

Thanks for that, I've had a quick look but it needs a long look. Seems promising though,

cheers
