Beano article in today's Metro

I was pleased to see the Beano have almost the whole of page three of today's Metro to itself. An article on the new 70 years of the Beano book. According to the article it has 352 pages which is great. I have photocopied the article and reduced it to A4 so I can scan it in one piece. I picked up as many Metros as I could and now have about a dozen original copies of the page in question, if you would like a copy just send me a personal e-mail with your name and address and i'll send you one free of charge. As I said I only have about a dozen so first 12 to e-mail will get one. I'll delete your e-mails after i have used the address so don't worry about my having your details. One question I was wondering if the artwork reproduced here in the Metro was their own or from the book - anyone know? The paste-up montage seems a bit too good for the Metro and the lettering style in the word balloons suggests it is from the book. The article doesn't mention the title of the book or when it is published, can anybody fill the gaps? Sorry just googled it and it is out on September 25 priced at 25 quid, but still no title.

I'm going to reply to my own post - nobody else seems willing. I have found a cover image of the new book and it is 16.50 on Amazon. No release date mentioned. Strange choice of cover though. One for the Christmas stocking methinks.

I've just googled this book and according to the WH Smith website they will be selling it for 16.50 as well, they have late opening here on Thursdays so I'll pop in tomorrow night and see if it's out yet. Most sites give 25 September as publication date. If they have it I won't wait for Christmas.

Thanks for that Steve. I wouldn't have even known it existed if not for your fime work there. Looks good for the Crimbo stocking and certainly one that we could all enjoy. And at a monster 352 pages, there must be a fair few new bits for all of us.

I seem to remember reading that it contains some unpublished stuff. I don't know why they chose the cover they did, Dennis is certainly not my favourite Beano Character, I would have thought a montage of dozens of characters would have been more eye catching. Confession time here but I never did like Gnasher and even today I still hope he is a passing fad. OK crucify me!

Morris Heggie (author) told me it was out this week when I e-mailed him recently. I'm looking forward to it!

I think Morris is making up for DCT not making much of the Dandy's 70th birthday! I think the reason for Dennis being on the cover is that he has been there almost continuously (even appearing in the David Parkin Danny cover a couple of years ago) since 1974, and for many Dennis and the Beano are synonymous - possibly why Dennis now has the cover and at least four internal pages every week.

I don't think anything can ever make up for that. I'm not saying that the Beano doesn't deserve all this fanfare and celebration- it does- but it does kind of rub salt in the wound of us who grew up with and enjoyed the Dandy more and got naught last year.

...unless of course they are planning a big 71st anniversary for the Dandy in December.... (well, I can dream. And sadly often do- although that's usually more often about finding old Dandys at 2nd hand bookshops...)

Eh? i always thought a "Beano" was a short holiday? (of the kind most likely had by 1930's families as they couldn't be away from the factory/mine for too long or they'd be broke)

Actually I received an email from Amazon today saying the book has been delayed until at least October 6th. (Not that Amazon are always reliable on dates.)

Really? Bloomin' Ada! My local Waterstones told me they didn't know when it'd be in stock. (Although they've only had the Beano Annual in this week, and still don't have the Dandy Annual, so that says it all.)

There was a big pile of them, just on the floor in the wrong section of the shop, not put properly on display so no discount sticker (which I was hoping for) on yet, so I didn't buy!

Had a good look through, though. Some interesting characters there I don't think I'd seen much of before like Wild Boy of the Woods from circa 1940 (in one reproduced strip he's fighting Hitler) which looked good. Strip reproductions are respectful, not like the 60/70 Years books where things can be resized and overlapping and partially obscured, and there's lots of intriguing and appealing material.
