Bargain Comics/Annuals

Post by David »

There's a Sunday carboot sale near me. I wasn't going to go this week, because I only had about £5 to spend (saving up and didn't want to go in my savings).
But I did go just in case they had some comics or annuals (they don't usually have either).

They did have some comics and annuals! :)

I found a Snoopy Classics book (A4 size): £1, Simpsons comics at 10p each (12 of them), and the follwowing annuals at 50p each or three for a pound (so I bought three sets of three):

Buster book 1972, Black Bob Book 1957, The Topper Book 1967, The Topper Book 1973, The Topper Book 1976, Dennis The Menace annual 1976, The Desperate Dan book 1976, The Beano Book 1978 and Shiver And Shake Annual 1979

Total: £5.20

The DCThomson annuals/Shiver And Shake were on a stall with loads of annuals, they had more annuals, but like I said, I didn't want to dip into my savings. But it's on next week anyway, so I'll see what I can get then. :D

I'd say that was quite a bargain!

It's obvious that he (The DCT books stall holder) knows I read them myself though as he always says "That will keep you entertained for a while."!

:offtopic1:
I made £39.
Though had to pay £25 for the table.
But a great advert for me...lots of business cards also given out.
On the day it was very sunny and hot.so a bad day for craft fairs...so I was amazed I did so well..

I have 2 craft fairs in November
and 2 in December.

So I'm going for it..

From my experience car boot sales are great places for bargains on old annuals, that said dont expect them to be without broken spines, scribbles and grubby pages, the chances of finding an old Wham or Lion annual in good condition are zero.

E bay is also a great source but again beware of descriptions.I recently bought a 70s annual describes as mint condition only to discover it had been written on inside.

Is that junk shop the one in Piccadilly that sells comics and annuals - near Subway I think it is? If so, it can be overpriced in there. Viz comics are sometimes £1.75 (or more) and they are not the rare ones either. Wythenshawe market sometimes has cheap Viz comics on, though I've not been to it for a while. And they have got annuals for £12, though most are around £4 I think.
Do Leigh usually have annuals/comics on? I live in Salford, so it's not too far for me to get there by bus.

I know, that works out at aprox. 33p. :) And I was particulary hoping there would be a Black Bob annual on, though as the last time I saw a Blackbob annual previously was when I was in my early teens (I'm nearly 27 now) in a book shop in Moss Side, I didn't think there would be any. In fact, that bookshop had quite a few, I should have bought them then! It has a price of 5/- inside written in pencil, plus someone has scribbles in pages. But it's not bad for 33p! :D

My best bargain was probably a couple of years ago or so when I got over 100 Beanos, a couple of "Beezer and Topper" comics (and a no.1 issue of Oink, but the cover wasn't there), a couple of Beano Annuals and a Monster Fun annual (though that had a couple of pages missing) for £1! That makes them less than 1p each! I don't think I'll get any cheaper than that!

Thanks for that. There's quite a few car boot sales I didn't know about. I'll have to go to different ones every week! :) My favourite car boot sale was the Wythenshawe one, that had comics and annuals every week, but that closed down despite the fact it was popular. The market is going the same way too (albeit gradually).

The shop in town, if the books or comics do not have a price on them or inside, ask the price of them. All the staff charge different prices - one admitted that some of the stuff was overpriced - and said there's a guy that thinks he knows about comics, so that's why the prices tend to be high, as it's usually him that puts the prices on. But if it's not got a price on it, they can charge what they want (which is usually cheaper) If you go at different times, you get to know who is the cheapest. It's open till around 7.30 I think. I've not been for a while, but when I went at near closing time once, the cheapest guy was on.

I went to the bookshop today, but the expensive guy was on. £2 for a Bash Street Summer Special! I didn't buy it. Maybe it's not that much, but it seemed a bit dear to me.

I missed the car boot sale last time, but went yesterday and got some Beezer annuals 3 for a pound. And he's going to try and get some more annuals in for next Sunday, so I'll go early before they go!

2 quid for a bash street summer special is a bit steep if it was the first one maybe but if it was a later one i wouldnt bother as you can pick them up for a matter of pence

It wasn't the first one, but it may have been the last one. It was the 2000 one, with £1.10 on the cover. Is that the last one? Shame they don't make them anymore.
