Can anyone name the artist from this "Birthday book for boys" 1972 annual.

Im nearly sure its Joe Colquhuon who drew the strips for Roy of the Rovers in the 70s and Charlies War for Battle in the 80s.

I loved Kid Chameleon when I was a kid, IPC adventure strips were often seen as inferior compared to DCTs adventure strips but personaly I preferred a lot of the IPC stuff.

Some of the DCT stuff looked and felt very dated even when I was a kid at the time reading them.

Didn't Joe Joe Colquhoun draw the weekly KC strip for Cor!!? This Birthday Book For Boys one-off looks like a very different art style to me, with Kid Chameleon looking quite different. I prefer it, though I like the Cor!! strip, too.

I agree with you about the IPC adventure strips. I thought they were far superior - I was especially mad about Francisco Solano Lopez's work. There are some great IPC adventure examples on steelclaw's blog.

Hadn't made the link there but I've enjoyed Ian Kennedy's work in various IPC comics over the years.

Kid Chameleon Strip.
I had never seen these lovely pages before till I saw them this morning but I did not have time to log -in and name Ian Kennedy as the artist..and now I find that Lew beat me to it..Darnit! Ian's black and white work is always special but I have always admired his colour work - great stuff.

It's interesting that Alex Ross took American Superhero comics by storm with his painted art for 'Marvels' in the 1990s - yet our own Ian Kennedy was producing work in a very similar style 20 years beforehand!

And we sussed that David Bowie was getting some of his image ideas from the IPC comics in the early 70s.

That story was printed on nice white paper, making it look even better than it does here.

I always loved those colour pages on thick white quality paper you got in the IPC annuals.

Yes he got them from everywhere else as well, but he was good.

It's a splendid set. When you look at some of the later pages, the Ian Kennedy art style is much more obvious. Incidentally, I think some of the latest batch of Commandos have covers by him.

Now all we need to know is ... who drew that also rather fab Fishboy strip?! If you look at the whole thing, the undersea critters are especially nicely drawn.
