Free Doctor Who comic

Post by stevezodiac »

This Saturday's Daily Mirror contains a free Doctor Who comic. It will probably be an edited version of the normal comic but that will make it unique and a must for any Dr Who completists out there. The Daleks content will make it worth having anyway. Here's a scan of the ad in today's paper. There are five other free comics mentioned but it doesn't say how to get them, probably with a coupon from Tesco/Smiths etc.

Just noticed the lettering - straight from TV21 c1965. And the original movies of course but which came first? Anyone know who designed that lettering style?

And now taken up by Geeks!

In the TV21 strips all the Dalek's word balloons were written in that style. Must have been murder for the letterer.

Yesterday's The People gave away a free National Geographic Kids magazine. Not what I'd call a comic (not one strip) but that's what the paper called it. Strange times.

Have Trinity Mirror got some hidden agenda, giving away free comics like this? That's two titles in the same weekend!

Looks like that idea soon fizzled out. I notice that from the third one it was reduced to an 8 page pullout with no strips.

Saturday's Daily Mirrors not selling enough maybe? Papers really shouldn't advertise something then do something else. It clearly says each issue would have a comic strip, and they haven't kept that promise. :x

Incidentally, if DWA wants to boost its sales, it would've been better off teaming up with The Sun, which sells far more copies than the Daily Mirror.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if there isn't anything at all. The newspapers seem to think its readers are stupid. In the 90s The Sun announced that every Saturday they'd have a Great American Comic with all-American comic strips, one of which was Spider-Man. In the middle of a storyline, they dropped the idea, but didn't bother teling the silly sods who might have actually been reading the damn thing!

Sounds as if the Mirror is doing the same thing.

EDIT Saturday morning:

I just had a look and it has now been shunted into the TV magazine as an 8-page pull-out.

I think we all know what news will be in next week's issue of DWA, and next month's DW Magazine - the Eleventh Doctor's costume, and the name of his companion. They were revealed yesterday, so if they'd continued to next weekend, the Mirror's DWA pullout would've been able to scoop the actual magazines!
