ABC Show

Post by Lew Stringer »

Anyone here attending the ABC Show at the Royal National Hotel (London) tomorrow? I was hoping to, but I have a lot on this week - plus the bad weather forecasted will probably delay trains anyway.

I've never attended those shows. Do they have many prewar and wartime comics? Those are the eras I'm hoping to build up a bit on now. (mid 1930s to late 1940s), as long as they're in good condition.

Any idea when the next show is?

I've been before. It's mostly the 60s/70s fare but a few older ones. Prices tend to be pretty high though as opposed to most conventions where they are lowered.

Thanks Chris. I didn't bother going, and judging by the lack of replies here neither did anyone else! I might attend the next one if it's convenient, but I've just won 14 old prewar/war UK comics from eBay for a couple of quid each so that'll keep me going for a while. :)

I'd be interested to know what they were. I used to be a bit of a UK superhero golden age collector (not sure if those words are in the right order!), so wonder if there's any in there.

They're all British humour comics Chris; Funny Wonder, Comic Cuts, Chips.

I don't think there were any prewar/wartime UK superheroes were there? There were loads in the postwar period though. Mike Higgs' new book reprints them for any interested parties:

Of course you're right  . Not only am I a collector (or, really, was), I'm also very interested in the World Wars. So double embarrassment :coat:

Amazing Mr X, Dandy 1944, mentioned in An Alphabet of Fun, one of the Dandy-Beano Golden Years books.

I went to the ABC show (as I live in London). I got 16 pre 1950 comics from Phil Clarke (including five Ally Slopers from pre 1900) and he had a bound volume of Puck (26 issues I think) from about 1920. He had loads of Tip Tops, Chicks Owns and Tiny Tots fom the 1930s/40s. He mentioned going to the show in the Midlands - is it next week?
