What comics did you buy today?

Today i took delivery of "The World-Shakers!" a 'new order' Sexton Blake Library from 1960 about Nazi flying saucers hidden in Finland by mad scientists. Ought to be good!

I just ebay'd a couple of volumes of The Captain, a sixpence magazine of the early 20th century with short 6-month volumes (so that the hardback bound volumes didn't get too large i suppose). It has similar content to other Boys' Own story papers, just with longer complete stories and articles, but conversely shorter serials as they had to be crammed into the volumes.

Anyway, i got one from 1901-2, and one for the middle-end of 1914, which ought to be very interesting.

Thanks for posting - The Youngster Who Knew No Fear is the one I mentioned upthread; a reprint of the nice Whizzer and Chips serial from 1971: Alfie in Africa, its often appealing artwork diminished somewhat by adding the Knockout 'colour scheme'!

Which 1980s annual is it? Always good to know which adventure strips appear in which year's annuals when browsing Ebay.

Well, more Alfie in Africa reprints do turn up in another IPC annual, I forget which but not Knockout I don't think, and under a different title again.

I'm not sure about other Knockout annual adventure strips - it would be nice to know what's tucked away in some of them, especially the unique strips.

The other day I bought the Dennis and Gnasher annual from Poundworld. Read it a lot quicker than I have previous Dennis annuals.

Bought the Beano Dandy Winter Games book from Poundland today. But it says it's got Billy The Cat in it (in the list of characters inside), but my book doesn't appear to have him in (had a good root through) - is this just a mistake on the ditors part or am I missing some pages? Shame one of the Dan strips doesn't have the back cover, so only half a Dan strip. Still, there's a lot of Dan in the book !

The other day I bought the Dennis and Gnasher annual from Poundworld. Read it a lot quicker than I have previous Dennis annuals.

Bought the Beano Dandy Winter Games book from Poundland today. But it says it's got Billy The Cat in it (in the list of characters inside), but my book doesn't appear to have him in (had a good root through) - is this just a mistake on the ditors part or am I missing some pages? Shame one of the Dan strips doesn't have the back cover, so only half a Dan strip. Still, there's a lot of Dan in the book !

Well spotted. They had a bad year with the annuals. Winter Games wasn't the only one with mistakes. The Dandy annual says on the back cover that Agent Dog2Zero is inside - he isn't - and two Beryl the Peril strips were reused from last year! They also must've printed too many of the Winter Games & Dennis and Gnasher annuals, as they shouldn't end up in Poundland/Poundworld in the first place (Borders stock perhaps? Or maybe they didn't reduce the quantity after Woolies closed last year?). That's two different pound shop chains selling them now then.

I noticed the familiar Beryl strips too! Suprised they reprinted such new strips, though it was most likely a mistake.

The Desperate Dan story, it wasn't missing the back cover, it was missing the centre pages - shame they didn't put them in, though the story wouldn't actually look amiss if it had actually ended on the first page!

Formula 1 annual was also in Home Bargains 99p. Ben 10 and other TV annuals were also in poundshops, so it's not just the DCT annuals. Though my local pound shops had no Bash Street Kids annual, Waterstones didn't either - thought it may have been disconinued until I read this forum. Some poundshops have also got the Best Of Jackie (sp?) books too.

The Winter Games books sold out pretty quickly after Christmas in Waterstones and other stores, so it's weird they are in pound stores. Not seen The Broons/Oor Wullie compilation book anywhere either.

That's the danger of waiting for limited edition books to come out on the cheap. Even Thomson's online store no longer has it.

I bought mine from Borders back in September but that's not much help to you now of course.

Well, I was in our local Poundland and I must have picked up the last Winter Games in there. I did like the double page spreads where they printed the old covers over 2 pages. Definitely my kind of centrefold!

I just recieved 4 more copies of Match magazine from the mid 80's, featuring Cannon comic strip, that takes my collection up to 32 issues.
