Hi I am a person from Norway that are writing an essay about comics and for this essay I am going to analyse comics from the UK and the USA. I will look at themes and stuff like that. But I was wondering if anyone could tell me a typical UK comic. By this i mean that I could ask a person on the streets about it and they would know what I am talking about.
Please reply, would be a very helpful

I guess the ones with most people might have an inkling would be:
Beano (traditional humour)
Dandy (traditional humour)
Girl (girls)
Bunty (girls)
Mandy (girls)
Eagle (boys)
TV Comic (though get confused and refer to TV21 and TV Action as a 'TV Comic')
and possibly 2000AD, as this has run for nearly 30 years but is more niche SF now than mainstream as it was in the 1980s

If you're focusing on existing comics of today, the one everyone knows is The Beano. If you're looking into the history of traditional UK comics then the various sections of this Comics UK website will be very useful for you. Good luck!

'Look-In' was also very popular in the 1970s and 1980s, and a fair slice of the general public would know it.
The problem I have with Magnet's and Conor's lists is I don't think the man/woman in the street would know 'Acne', 'BIG', 'Cracker', 'Buzz', 'Big One' or 'Giggle', and we're now so far past the prime of the other titles, most would be vague memories - if that - to others.
I'm curious, Blyant, in what you hope to question 'a person in the street' about... are you going to do a survey or something? When all is done with the thesis, I think the end product might be of interest to the members here.

First let me say thank you to everybody that replied to this topic.
The reason why i said a guy on the streets was because i wanted a comic that would be 100% british and to be that a british person would have to know about it (or something like that

The Beano and The Dandy are probably the comics best suited to your needs. Launched in the late Thirties and still going, they (particularly Beano) demonstrate the "traditional" British comic. There's no doubt lots of info on the net all about them.

As Lew is one of the contributors to UK comics, there is little to add as The Beano and The Dandy are the two that everybody will know and are still going strong.
The only others that Brits will still remember are those that were character-led such as Roy Of The Rovers, Dan Dare (of Eagle fame) or Bunty for the girls.

I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!
