Great news chums! Four books for collectors!

Post by Lew Stringer »

Save up those crisp new fivers for a slap up feed of nostalgic joy this Autumn with four new books sure to delight UK comic collectors!

Great British Comics (October 2006) ?18.99 by Paul Gravett and Peter Stanbury is a richly illustrated history of British comics from the 1920's to the present.

The Dandy Monster Comic (November 2006) ?16.99 is slip-cased facsimile of the very first Dandy book from 1941!

The Broons (November 2006) ?16.99 is a slip-cased facsimile of the very first Broons Book, first published in 1939!

Sporting Supermen (October 2006) ?9.99 by Brendan Gallagher is a historical look back at the most famous UK sports strip characters Alf Tupper, Roy of the Rovers, Skid Solo, Nipper, and more.

I'm sure most of us will find something to please us about that lot!

:D

Looking forward to the Gravett and the Alf Tupper Book. Alf along with Wilson were great faves of mine as a boy.

Great news indeed,Lew!I wonder if DC Thomson could conduct an online poll vis a vis what fans would like to see republished?Imagine a complete set of your favourite comic, for example-Buddy,Bullet,Spellbinder,Crunch all in a self contained volume or two.The poll could also stipulate that a required amount, say 500 to 1000 buyers with monies forwarded by credit card(reimbursed of course if a no-go!)to sift out the time wasters and highlight the real fans.Sounds like a sensible business proposition to me.Surely DC Thomson must be aware of the huge fan following of their comics past?

From what Paul says:

"there are still masses of exciting and first-rate comics being produced here today. The book is not just a nostalgic time-warp - it comes bang up to date and shows the real continuity across the decades. "

...it sounds like it's going to be a good book. One thing that always slightly irritated about some previous books on comics was that they'd wallow in the past too much and be too dismissive of the present. As I've said here a few times, today's comics are being enjoyed just as much as those of 40 or 60 years ago were by the age group they're aimed at. Therefore it's good to give an objective view of the continuity of British comics. Definitely looking forward to this book.
