The Woman in Black? Help wanted...

Post by fústar »

Chums,

Just got this message from a pal. Can we help her out?
This is a long shot, but if you happen to come across a Mandy comic with a story called the Woman in Black, I'd love to know. I know at least three people who remember it traumatically and I'm dying to read it again to see was it actually scary or were we just very impressionable.
Go forth and wrack your brains. :)

The title that is nearest to The Woman In Black in my records for Mandy is Lynn And The Lady In Black. Could the query relate to this serial? The first page of the opening instalment is below.

Just in case it's relevant, fustar, the serial is from the early months of 1972. It is quite short and runs from issue 267 (Feb. 26 1972) to 271 (Mar. 25 1972), a mere five instalments altogether. I do have them all in case your correspondent is desperate.

Not what she was looking for I'm afraid, but she has elaborated a bit on her memories...
as far as i remember the main character is a young woman whose boyfriend/husband is a fisherman. the woman, who only she can see, initially seems as threat, appearing scarily on clifftops with lanterns etc., but turns out to be a fisherman's widow determined to guide other boats in, in the fashion of a human lighthouse.it really doesn't sound at all scary when i write it down but i think there was one hideous close up that did it.
Sounds like it could have been a one-off thing to me. Perhaps in an annual/special? Any other suggestions?

To be fair, fustar, I don't have every issue of Mandy so I obviously can't be absolutely sure the story isn't there. Your suggestion that it just might be a complete raises the possibility that it may be one of the Damian Darke series of individual mystery stories. I have not bothered to catalogue these as my interest is predominantly in the serials, but if the name Damian Darke triggers any memories in your correspondent I could check in the ones I've got but, due to other pressures on my time this week, I wouldn't really be able to look into it before next Monday at the earliest.
