Is it true the comics are being turned into a live arts performance, with MAXtreme! The Dandy-Beano Roadshow touring the country to perform street theatre? Karen Gillan is tipped to play Minnie the Minx as a 20 something, reflecting on her past, with her cousin playing young Minnie.

Methinks it could be something good if people in 'the Know' are this excited (please please please don't tell me that the Dandy is going even more Xtreme:(???)
Reading comics since 1970. My Current Regulars are: 2000 AD (1977-), Judge Dredd Megazine (1990-), Spaceship Away (2003-), Commando (2013-), Deadpool and Wolverine (2023-), Quantum (2023-), Fantastic Four (2025-).

I reckon there is no chance of the Dandy switching to cheaper paper for precisely the same reason as I suggested in the Classics thread - after next month, DCT will produce nothing else in A4 newsprint, and the white paper format previously used for the Beano is already gone. It feels very much like they are moving into a model where there are precisely three printing methods:

1. A4(ish) stapled glossy (Magazines, comics) with or without heavier glossy cover
2. A5 glued newsprint with cover (Fun Size, Commando) (how long will this last?)
3. Newsprint in either tabloid or broadsheet (newspapers)

Maybe it will lose the heavier covers to be like the Beano?

Losing the heavier covers? That would affect BeanoMAX too.

As for Commando, has that always been in it's current A5 format?

That's not what I said - I was only referring to the Dandy losing the heavier covers to be like the Beano. Nothing to do with other publications. And truthfully, I don't think that's going to happen.

Yes Digi, Commando has always been in its present format. An oasis of calm in a world of change.

Sorry to be pedantic but Commando is smaller than A5.

I don't think anything is 100% settled on what the new printers will bring to the publications. Personally I'm hoping for a heavier paper stock, like Toxic, so that the comics actually stay upright on the shelves. The Beano suffers badly from folding over and obscuring the logo at present when it's not bagged. (And when it is bagged, shop staff shelve it upside down and/or back to front. Ya can't win!)

Yes... when I bought my comics from WHSmith on Wednesday, Classics was in plain sight right at the front (too little too late!) and The Beano was hidden behind other titles on the top shelf. BeanoMAX was also obscured (on a lower shelf - they should be together IMHO) and I didn't even spot Dandy Xtreme. A couple of titles were upside down and back to front though. The Fun-Sizes were in their proper display unit but there was only one copy of each, and some girls mag was behind them sharing the space.

Indeed, it's "pocket library" size! A noble format that has endured for more than a century!

I do hope the new style Desperate Dan will survive. One of the successes of the Xtreme era, in my opinion, was the revamped strip.
