Regarding the 25th birthday of Dennis, no I don't think it was celebrated, but I wasn't reading The Beano in 1976.
I've had a quick flick through all the 1976 Beanos, except issue 1753 dated Feb 21 1976 which I can't find, but which can be seen here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0583018021. None of the issues I looked at have any reference to Dennis' 25th anniversary on the cover (didn't look inside any of them).
You don't need to look inside... only at the back cover (which is where the rest of his strip will be). But if the front covers don't mention it, I'm 99% certain that the back covers won't either.
Nothing on the back covers, either (wouldn't have been much of a celebration issue if Dennis' anniversary was only mentioned on the back, as you commented). Of course, I couldn't check the back of issue 1753 dated Feb 21 1976, which, as I mentioned above, seems to have gone AWOL.

OK, sounds like a no, then. Would that make 1988 the Beano's first character celebration (for the ironically soon-to-be-cancelled Lord Snooty), or did that just get swallowed up in the general '50 Golden Years' mania?
Lew said that Dennis's 40th did get something done, but that wasn't until 1991.
Euan Kerr took over in 1986, didn't he? It wouldn't surprise me if he instigated the tradition of noting anniversaries officially - he always did seem to be up for any excuse for a ceremony. I think his last special issue - not counting Bash Street's 50th photo gimmick - was the Beano's 65th birthday in 2003, notable both for its inherent unnotableness and the fact that regardless Kerr somehow managed to whip up an issue-long festival which actually somewhat surpassed the magnitude of the celebrations laid on by Digby for the 70th. Did he do anything for the 55th? It honestly wouldn't surprise me...

Hah, as a person living in That London, I can assure you the answer is no! (In fact, at least in this posh part of it, shops which even stock the Beano on a Wednesday are increasingly the exception - and the Dandy is even harder to come by.)

The Dandy comes out on Tuesday here in London. Saw the latest issue with Bananaman on the cover this morning. Does it come out on Tuesday elsewhere? Next day's papers come out about 9.30 pm in the west end.
