Why no UK Green Lantern annual this year?
Why no UK Green Lantern annual this year?
Quite a shame really. Would have made a lovely gift for a young person. Does no one have a license to publish UK DC comics nowadays?

I'd guess that it's non-appearance has a lot to do with the Green Lantern film bombing at the box office! (Strictly speaking there was a British Green Lantern Annual published in hardback sometime during the 1960s, but this simply contained half a dozen American comics bound together).

Titan have the DC licence.

Titan publishes UK DC comics in Batman Legends, DC Universe and the more juvenile Brave & the Bold. DC haven't produced what we know as traditional annuals in the UK for years. In fact, DC UK haven't really been a big part of the British comics scene for the last 40 years. Even their most successful Brit comic in that time, the Super-Heroes, was dwarfed by Marvel UK. The ones in the 80s, like Heroes, Zones etc, all disappeared after only a few issues. Only Batman seemed to have any kind of appeal to UK newsagent readers.
Mind you, I do think there is a big market waiting for reasonably priced annuals, although primarily for the likes of Warlord, Valiant etc.

Actually, the LEM Superman title in the late 80's lasted quite awhile, though admittedly Batman did better.starscape wrote:Titan publishes UK DC comics in Batman Legends, DC Universe and the more juvenile Brave & the Bold. There's a huge market for reasonably-priced (£1-2) Warlord or Valiant annuals. They simply fly off the shelves at Oxfam, Age Concern, Scope etc...

Unfortunately, I doubt if there's any way of making new annuals viable at that price.felneymike wrote:There's a huge market for reasonably-priced (£1-2) Warlord or Valiant annuals. They simply fly off the shelves at Oxfam, Age Concern, Scope etc...

I love finding bargains in charity shops, but the only reason they're so cheap is that they're second hand and thus the shop gets 100% profit. Presumably new ones would be £7.99 at least (the price of this year's Beano and Dandy annuals).
