What comics did you buy today?

Has anyone actually read - I mean, really read - a pile of those Beanobooks joke books? They were pumping them out like there was no tomorrow at one stage. Some of the visual gags were definitely reused (albeit redrawn and/or with different characters), but it'd be interesting to see how much duplication there was on the stock art pages.

I have three of the very large format Beanobooks joke books and eight of the smaller ones. Also have about the same number of puzzle books. And no, I've never read any of them! Just flicking through is enough to get an impression. I've said it before: they're awful! The lowest form of licenced tat. That said, I do pick them up if I find one I don't already have, just for collection's sake. Mostly from car boot sales where they go very very cheaply (about 10p each...).

The great Beanobooks are the ones where they reprint old strips in huge bumper volumes. There's a thread about them here somewhere...

The big coffee table "History of the Beano" book from 2008 for Father's Day. My choice but a quick flick through and it looks amazing.

Got this on Sunday. Never thought I'd ever have a Dandy "Monster Comic" - I am now fortunate enough to own two. This one is the 1950 annual and is not in great condition, but nevertheless a good find in Oxfam.

£30. Oxfam DO know what things are worth, so it wasn't bargain of the century. It would probably go for a similar amount on eBay. But it was there in front of me and I knew I couldn't leave without buying it, it had that strange kind of hold on me...

This week, in Netherlands, I found a couple of reprints of British material. De Man Van Staal #5 , which you'll quickly work out is Robot Archie. 75 colour pages with colour card covers and an ad on the inside back page for Plezier met Sjors, a native Dutch magazine which featured Billy Bunter (Billy Turf) as well as Archie. The other was a pocket library - Super Reeks #326. The Spider on the cover and the reprint story, Mensen Zonder Schadouw (Men without Shadows)?
I also bought quite a pile of original Dutch comics incl. Eric de Noorman; Dick Bos; De Rode Ridder; S.S. Anne; Frank de Vliegende Hollander and some lilliputs. So many comics there.

I was very pleased to finally get hold of a copy of the Valiant featuring the very first instalment of Raven on the Wing!

Found a lovely Dennis mug in a charity shop the other day. Made by Staffordshire Tableware in 1997. Also picked up Oor Wullie's 2007 annual for 35p. Hooray for Orpington!

Can't find the Beano or Dandy regular comics anywhere: every month or so, I sift thru' the contents of each to keep abreast of contemporary trends. However this past two weeks represents the first time in my life I can't find a single, solitary copy of either of these comics, even after going out of my way to search for signs in the heart of a decent-sized city [ targets included WH Smiths and Tesco, which used to be foolproof in this respect......]

Will try again though.

The four Commando's
Pocket Western Library no 16 (looks early 70's, price is 7p. The artwork is fantastic and the ink is nice and black)
Suspense Picture Library Holiday Special (date unknown, but the price is 35p)
Eagle Annual 1963
School Friend Annual 1955
The Only Good Dalek (a seemingly one-off Doctor Who book, in a different format to the panini magazine reprints)
Daring Adventures for Boys (an annual from the 30's or 40's full of text stories, many of them told from the point of view of animals)
Viz: The Big Hard One (reprints from the first 12 self-published issues, a bit rough around the edges but I still laughed my head off. Bring back Paul Whicker!)

Today, I had the biggest (and cheapest) e-bay win I ever had.

I had won a bundle of Boy's adventure comics (5 Victor, 4 Warlord, Two Battle, 2 Valiant and one Hornet) plus a Sparky (No. 555) for 99p

(depite the fact that the postage and handling will offset the purchase somewhat, it's a great buy for me.)

Even adding the P&P, you still only paid a few quid, right? Sounds like you got a bargain.
