Grandpa Broon has already featured in the Dandy back in its earliest days under the name Smarty Grandpa from issue 1 (4/12/1937) to issue 125 (20/08/1940) and his last ever appearance was on page 126 of the 1941 Dandy Monster Comic published in September the previous year (1940)

The Broons' grandfather is known as Granpaw. Are they even the same character, instead of simply lookalikes? Wikipedia's page for The Broons doesn't mention Smarty Grandpa at all.

They look exactly the same bar the Scottish brogue same artist (Dudley Watkins) so they are just lookalikes if you've got a Dandy Monster comic 1939 either the reprint or original and one of the Broons/Wullie reprint books with late 30s early 40s Broons strips in you can compare the two yourself can't see any difference at all tbh

As an occasional poster but an avid reader of this forum, I am with the rest of you guys in being sad at the demise of the Dandy. I took the plunge and subscribed at the start of the revamp, and it is sad that, currently, the comic makes me laugh out loud at some point every week. I feel that it has, over the last few months, really found its feet and struck a comfortable balance of traditional and new. I certainly feel that my world will be a greyer place without Jamie Smart's stuff, Mr Meecher and Nuke Noodle etc. Thanks Thomson for the last few years, you made a 42 year old very happy...(It was like reading them at 8 years old again)
I'm sure the online comic will be different, I will probably give it a try....

]No mention of Sunday Post, thus implying that Wullie and the Broons are Dandy characters when they're not. .

I cant help thinking maybe they should put wullie & the broons in the dandy as one last throw of the dice either as reprints or get jamie or someone to draw new adventures more suited to the current art style seeing as they are not really in any comics only newspaper strips.

Also in the first Dandy monster comic (I have the reprinted version) it looks like Oor Wullie on the this book belongs to page next to Desperate Dan.

Again Watkins was responsible for the artwork on the title page unless it was for readers south of the border that wouldn't recognise it? Another Watkins character in the Magic comic Peter Piper bore more than a passing resemblance to Wullie too

Just a small update, got off the phone today with D C Thomson. For £40, they can deliver the last few issues of the Dandy including the final issue in December. Fed up of the hit and miss chance of it being in the shops around Stafford.

I would think with all the media its getting that the last issue at least will be more widely available in shops. Particularly when it is reprinting the 1st issue along with the new stories.
I wasn't a regular Dandy collector, but I would be interested in picking up the last issue.

Although saddened, I'm excited to see what the final issue will look like. Now that there will be a finite number of comics to get, I'd like to have the whole lot (he foolishley states trying to imagine finding enough spare pennies to fund getting hold of full runs of comics from the 60s, 50s, 40s and the infamous number 1!!!!)

Well, you'll get a facsimile copy of number 1 free with the final issue.

That's the price of a six month sub. You probably pay the fee, then get half of it back when the comic ceases publication in 3 and a half months.

A delightful lady called Pat told me I would be sent the Beano for the remainder of the subscription. Being a Dandy fan, not sure if thats much of a consolation!

Well that confirms what happens to unexpired subs (such as those won in a recent competition!). I hope people who already subscribe to the Beano don't wind up with two copies.

We are surely in the dystopian future of MCC vs Rollerball as predicted by the Goodies, where you have to keep it secret that you are a scoutmaster, and the only comics are Randy and Porno.

Well done Dandy staff! After I bought a Harry Hill Dandy and didn't recognise the people in it, I didn't get another until recently (I disliked the Dennis & Gnasher revamp, speaking personally, so stopped subscribing to the Beano) and the latest Dandy is quite good. There are, however, six newsagents locally, and none of them stocks it...
