Thank you to all those forum members who took the time to explain how these cd roms work. A spescial thanks to Ispy who give me an "idiots step by step" much needed as I am useless with computers, I appreciate this.
Rightly or wrongly I have ordered a cd rom with among other titles includes "Action"
which I findly remember reading in the 70s. I wish I had kept them but like a lot of members in the Forum it didnt happen that way. If I get the cd rom actually running
it will be great to see these covers again that I havent saw for over 35 years.
I have waited and waited for the Best of Action comic book to be released by Titan for the past 3 years but it is delay after delay.
I just wish someone would do an official version

:offtopic1: Wilsia, have you looked at http://www.sevenpennynightmare.co.uk? That is about as close as you will get to an official website for Action. :offtopic1:

The Kindle Fire also acts as a media player so the screen resolution will be very good.

For those justifying piracy by claiming that UK publishers will never release comics digitally, take a look at this:

http://www.egmont.com/Press/News-and-Pr ... -i-books-/

Ok, it's Roy of the Rovers, and not everyone's cup of tea, but it's a start and it makes sense to begin with their most famous character. Egmont are obviously testing the waters to see if there's any potential in this and if reaction is good it'd make good business sense to develop other properties into iBooks.

What is sure though is that if people decide to support some eBay pirate and his dodgy discs instead, just because they wannit now, the official publishers won't think it's worth their time. Your call, folks.

I didnt know Egmont had the rights to Roy of the Rovers. According to Wikipedia (not the most reliable source, I know) they only have the rights to characters created after 1970. But maybe they have the rights to reprint material from after that date as well.

Still it's nice to see them releasing an ibook of this and hopefully it will lead to them releasing more ibooks and Egmont's new Classic Comics imprint looks interesting.
I wonder what lead them to deciding to release the ibook.

Like Buster, they probably got Roy because he was still being published at the time. That's a good catch, I'll go correct that.
EDIT - Page updated: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleetway_Publications

If those e-comics are a success, then Misty and Buster will probably be next.

I thought it was already common knowledge in fandom that Egmont owned Roy? That's how they were able to release that reprint special a few years ago!

"I see that there is a 'bountiful harvest' of illicit comics/mags-related DVDs available on a well-known online site, that is multiplying like wildfire-----this has magnified noticably over the last couple of weeks. The whole lot might get shut down on a whim, but it's pretty alarming just how rapidly this service/disservice is manifesting....."

At Collectormania yesterday in Glasgow there was a dealer with a pile of cd-roms and some of you who go to the National will know who that is. I noted Strange Adventures, Dracula (Marvel), House of Mystery and Eagle among lots of others, most of which were pd material freely available online. So, it's ether paying for something illegal or paying for pd, legel material which can be downloaded for free at various sites. If you pitch up at the Olympia thingy in a few weeks you'll find them there. It surprises me that the organisers don't take more care in vetting what's on sale as it was obvious at a glance that bootleg copies of non-pd films and t.v. shows were available at 3 different dealers. Turning a blind eye, perhaps? Like the Harry photos, they're available in other countries and on the interweb so what's the problem here? And there is money to be made.

Wilsia, to read the files on your cd-rom, perhaps you should download CDisplayEx:-
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdisplayex/
As far as I'm aware, this wee programme allows you to read a number of different file types on your computer. I use it and a couple of others but this one is good. You can set it to read 1 or 2 pages on a screen and ask it to fit to size, relatively easily. And, once installed it seems to work automatically when you double click a comic file. Have a footer with it, you should like it.

I'm guessing you meant to quote Tin Can there and not me? Because I certainly knew that. I don't know why Wikipedia had the implication that IPC owned him, but the reality should be clear now that I made that edit to the Fleetway article.

I'm delighted to hear that Edgemont are looking to digital reprints.

I'm sure a lot of people, me included, would be happy to pay for quality reprints from the legal publishers than deal with dodgy pirate discs. Of course the 2009 specials were supposed to lead to something too, so excuse me if I don't hold my breath in anticipation.

ETA: Looking at the iTunes listing for RotR I see the four 'volumes' listed only run to 26 pages, so less a volume and more an issue. And £1.99 per issue seems a little on the steep side for a digital reprint. I rarely pay that much for original comics.

The "problem" is that two wrongs don't make a right.

Reading through these posts it becomes obvious that the excuse of "we must preserve these comics for future generations" is pretty weak. What is boils down to is most of those defending the illegal discs and downloads just want the comics for themselves. They want something for nothing (or near as damn it), with a massive sense of entitlement that they should have it just because they want it, and the law can go to hell. "Breaking the law is the only way I'll get to read them" they plead, as though owning a run of Captain Hurricane is as necessary as food and water.

Ironic that most of those pirated comics feature morality tales of right and wrong.

You are conflating two different things here as far as I, and I suspect many others, are concerned. Do I want to read these comics for myself? Yes I do. Do I want them for free? Not as such, no. I am buying old comics when I can afford them and taking as long as an hour and a half per comic to scan and process them. It's going to take years to get all the comics I'm after, and more money than I like to contemplate, and when I'm done I have no intention of making a single penny off this digital collection.

It's true I have a digital collection of Misty which I didn't scan. It's from the official Edgemont authorised Misty website. And if Edgemont decide to publish an official digital edition I'll be first in the queue for a subscription.

Can anybody answer this question for me why doesn't the copyright owner just have the listing of their pirated material taken down from the very popular auction site? Can't be that difficult for the huge conglomerates that own them....

Marionette, it's Egmont, not Edgemont.

Whereabouts on that Misty comic site does it say that it's officially authorised by Egmont, out of interest? I couldn't find any references saying they'd given official permission and approval. But you may know something I don't, there.

You didn't look far, it's on the front page.
Egmont UK Limited is the owner of the copyright and all other intellectual property rights associated with the 'Misty' series of comics.
