Does anyone remember Super DC?

I bought the first issue of Super DC and would have got them all if i'd known it would only last 12 issues. I think Dennis Gifford did some cartoons and Mick Anglo's name cropped up i think. It's one of those old comics that never seems to turn up anywhere not even on ebay. Was a good idea and even had text stories which had just about died out by then. At the time there were also those Commando sized Man from Uncle and Batman comics which are as scarce. This may seem strange but there is one thing that almost makes me tingle with nostalgia and that is Dick and Harry asking Pop for pocket money in the Beezer. Whenever i see those panels I feel like i'm almost physically going back to my childhood. Does anyone else have one catalist that sends them back in time. It's almost like that deja vu feeling.

While as a Victor fan, the design of the wings, grenade or anchor on the front of the Victor for the true story indicating Army Navy or Air Force should be the one that takes me back, but I think it is the Editor Team strip from Sparky that takes me back the most. I can almost feel the years dropping away when I read that strip.

However Karen did discover another way and that was when I was able to phone Ian Kennedy. Karen reckons I dropped 30 years in about 3 seconds!

Hi Steve, I think you'll find that 'Super DC' ran to 14 issues not 12 between 1969 and 1970 and that they even managed to publish the 'Super DC Bumper Book' somewhere in there as an extra treat. I bought it at the time for a while but was disappointed that it didn't match up with the production values of the originals from which the strips were reprinted. and there were indeed filler strips by dear old Denis Gifford included.
As to comic items that send me back with a thump to a winter tea-time in the mid 1960's or whatever they are many and various, but the Dudley Watkins' Oor Wullie strip where he decides to become an eskimo after seeing the film 'Nikki of the North' and in the end is tucked up in his nice warm bed by his Ma after his igloo has been washed away by a torrential downpour is about as good as it gets.

Yes and that reminds me of Baby Crockett digging a tunnel through the snow from his front door and round in circles until he came back to his front door again. I love the winter in comics. Also Ginger in bed, his bed always looked really cosy.

I can remember Super DC appearing circa November 1969, IIRC wasn't it brought out to tie in with ITV showing the Adam West Batman series on Saturday evenings? I also seem to remember that it used some material from TV Tornado - the text stories and the sailor character as its "editor". When ITV stopped showing the series the magazine just seemed to fade away.

A couple of years later about nine issues were collected and bound into a sort of album and sold for 25p, IIRC. They had the front and back covers removed and a card cover. Later even than that I found the Super DC Bumper Book, or annual to the rest of us, which had came out for Christmas 1971, and that seems to have been that for the title.

The Batman tv show aired in 1966, so Super DC would have been a bit late for that. I assume Top Sellers published it because by late '69 Odhams / IPC had lost (or given up) the British rights to Batman strips. Also, Super DC was a good promotional mag for Top Sellers, who also distributed the American DC comics.

Admittedly ITV started showing the Batman series in 1966 and ran through 1967, but they stopped in 1967 towards the end of series two. In the autumn of 1969 they ran the third series once a week on Saturday evenings, and at about the same time, November-ish, Super DC appeared, hence my guessing that Super DC was tying into the series. By the time Smash! had been dumbed down by IPC circa March 1969 the only superhero strips appearing were Fantastic Four and Thor.

Ah right. Didn't know the third series had been delayed. (But it explains why I didn't remember Batgirl from the sixties as I must have missed the third series on its first screening.)

Sorry, you must be right then. Also, I think the Superman cartoon series was being shown in some areas around that time too, so it'd make sense to launch Super DC at that time.

I lived in the Tyne Tees region, and they didn't show the Superman cartoon series at all, except for a couple of weeks when there was some sort of strike action that disrupted some programmes. I actually preferred the replacement programmes to the regular shows!

That's probably why Supes was the main cover star rather than Batman. I'd thought that as the comic was tying in with the Batman series, then Batman would dominate the cover. Unless the editor had seen the third series...
