Yay! I loved the original Aztec bars. To me they were 100 times cooler than the common-or-garden (and far too sickly) Mars bar! Unfortunately it seems to be a fact that our sense of taste changes with age, so that in later life it becomes impossible to recapture one's youthful sensation of sucking aniseed balls with a Tizer chaser. On the other hand it's probably just as well since my own favourite accompaniment to the latest Valiant was chocolate mousse scooped up with smoky-bacon crisps!

Incidentally, the vintage adverts that bring back most nostalgic memories for me are the ones featuring old breakfast cereals and their free gifts. Can anybody else remember those brightly-coloured plastic submarines that sank and rose in pressurized pop bottles? Or the powered yachts, or the luminous ghosts, or the puffkins??? Somehow there's nothing in life that can quite compare with shaking a newly-opened box of Corn Flakes until the cellophane-wrapped 'treasure' buried within finally broke surface!

Maybe we ought to start a section for all these old adverts? And how about advertising strips like Tommy Walls, Inspector Murray...and the unforgettable Milky Bar Kid?

Yes, didn't they contain a tablet of salt or something that caused the sub to rise and sink as it dissolved? I'd forgotten about those!

When I was a kid I started collecting chocolate wrappers for ages. Had a box full of them. Then one day felt it was a mad hobby and threw them all away!



I'm sure there must be collectors out there though. I know bubble gum wrappers are collectible so I'm sure there must be choc wrapper collectors around too. They might have their own conventions for all we know.

I remember starting a scrapbook of sweet wrappers when I was about 6 or 7 years old. My mum soon found out and made me chuck them away cos she wasn't going to let me start up a collection of just rubbish.

Anyone remember the short lived Dr Who bar? With one panel of a story on each bar. I collected 14 of the 15(?) only for my mum to throw them out ?What are you collecting litter for?? Ho hum.

Comics and sweets went hand-in-hand.
It brings back memories of going down to the newsagents on a Saturday morning to pick up a copy of the Topper and a couple of packets of Spangles to munch whilst reading.

Always liked the Butterscotch 'Old English' Spangles

Mind you,would anyone here consider reading their old comics now with a messy bar of Chocolate in their hands?

Great stuff Lew! It's especially nice to be reminded of the wonderful Brian Lewis - though it's probably worth noting that the astronaut in the Letraset ad was reproduced from an earlier one by some guy named Bellamy!

I always felt that Lewis died far too young, just as he was starting to break into the American market. He would have been perfect for Judge Dredd too, but strangely enough the only time he ever got the opportunity to draw that character for 2000AD it was also in an advertising context. (I'll offer a free plastic cup as the prize for the first person who can say when and where this appeared! )

How about the Desperate Dan bar? A long pinkish-orange chewy bar with black bits on it that crackled when you chewed them! I seem to remember getting a free one with Dandy. Personal favourites for eating while reading comics were fruit salads, pear-drops and spangles. The best thing about pear-drops was if you got a large bag (a half instead of a quarter) it might last you through an annual (ie it would last me through an annual unless my brother or sister pinched them!!!)

Apparently in 1950 ice cream kept you fit.
