Recently got a good copy of Joe 90 No. 2, the British Comedy Awards version of the 2013 Beano Book, and a few fantastic-condition Commandos from the late sixties. Now waiting for Hotspur 1140, which features Congreve rockets on the cover, a slightly different take on my favourite genre, the fireworks issue.

Been rediscovering how much fun old comics from the 50's are...
Got three 1952 Beano's...just love Pansy Potter in wonderland and Biffo..
also early Dennis...But lovely Iron fish...also reading the exciting text stories..
Also got some mid and late 60's Dandy's with the brilliant land of monsters by Paddy..
got a bit carried away buying but very happy..
must get some 1964 Beano's for early Leo Baxendale gems..also more Paddy B's work..

Kiddy Fun Album 1949 from an antique shop in Oxford - I hadn't seen a Gerald Swan annual before and this one has great art-work and a seemingly endless cast of characters. It's all comics, no stories, which seems unusual for the time, and the text is hyphenated to help kiddies pro-nounce the syl-la-bles. Ex-cell-ent!
Re: What comics did you buy today?
My dad bought me a Beano book named Comic Capers. It is a huge book that contains all the content of Classic from The Comics. Only 50p well worth the money!

There's a thread about that if you're interested:Dunder Ed wrote:My dad bought me a Beano book named Comic Capers. It is a huge book that contains all the content of Classic from The Comics. Only 50p well worth the money!

Any idea where from? And by the way, I think the content in that book is from CFTC's predecessors, Best of Beezer and Best of Topper, which both also included Beano and Dandy stories.Dunder Ed wrote:My dad bought me a Beano book named Comic Capers. Re: What comics did you buy today?
Yesterday I got 2 big blocks of Girl's Crystal from the 40's, early 1944 and early 1945. Interestingly it was still weekly, and 20 pages long with a colour(ish) picture on the cover! Though the picture did not take up the whole cover as it had done pre-war. The pages are very small, but I know that they shrank to that size in 1938. That's where all the paper that was not being used on the Magnet and Gem went!
Re: What comics did you buy today?
It was from a tiny little market in SIdmouth.

I picked up this book in a charity shop in Deptford High Street today. its a nice thick book - a biography of Charles Shulz complete with full colour Peanuts strips and some very early work of his including his first published drawing in Ripley's Believe it Or Not. It was 30 bob and is in great condition for a book published in 1976.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
That's a good deal, and looks interesting!
I saw a great lump of a newspaper comic reprint book in Oxfam recently, all in Italian. I thought it was an Italian strip, but an article at the front had examples in English (and hand-lettered), so I didn't bother buying it.
Anyway, today I got:
The Beano (very, er, orange! Still, Dennis on the cover looks like he used to!)
The 4 Commando's
The Phoenix issue 54 (subscription troubles >.< my renewed yearly sub was supposed to start from 54, but I haven't had it, or 55. Gonna ring up on Monday)
Hurricane Annual 1968
I also got a translated Japanese comic called Wild 7, which I had randomly plucked off a shelf in the Kyoto International Manga Museum back in September, and been annoyed that I'd be unable to read it until I'd learned Japanese properly. Anyway, it's just as funny as it looked!
Also an untranslated Japanese romantic comic. Very, er, sparkly

The Dandy Annual 2013 for £1 at my local Sainsbury's.
I already got a copy but just couldn't resist (besides it looked like it needed rescuing) and is now in my spares.
