Title: Life’s a Ball for Nadine
Artist: Mario Capaldi
Writer: Unknown
Publication: 8 November 1980 to 21 March 1981
Synopsis: Greystreet School’s netball team needs another good player and they find it in the new girl, Nadine Nash. However Nadine is more interested in disco-dancing than netball. Although she eventually joins the team and finds netball helping her disco-dancing and vice-versa, she still cares more for disco-dancing than helping the team – until two rivals set out to cheat her at both!
Significance: Of all the sports stories that made up so much of Jinty’s staple, Life’s a Ball for Nadine is the one chosen to be representative for two reasons. First, it was so bold to feature a black girl for its heroine, (and incidentally, for the two cheats and the woman who alerts Nadine to one of their tricks) which had never been seen before or since in girls’ comics. Coloured girls rarely feature in girls’ comics, and when they are, they used as companions, team mates and supporting characters, not the star of the serial. Second, it was virtually unique for a girls’ serial to feature netball when most stories in girls’ comics traditionally used swimming, hockey, riding, tennis, ice skating, and athletics – or in more modern cases, cycling, gymnastics, skateboarding, roller-skating, and martial arts.
Other Jinty sports classics include: Concrete Surfer, (28/1/78-10/6/78) illustrated with brilliantly drawn skateboarding; Curtain of Silence, (8/5/77-20/8/77) in which a promising but selfish cyclist is taken prisoner in an Iron Curtain country; Clancy on Trial, (20/5/78-21/10/78) which sees a grandfather putting Clancy through a series of sports trials to determine her worth to be his heir; Black Sheep of the Bartons, (6/10/79-22/12/79) in which difficult Bev “black sheep” Barton discovers a talent for judo; Cursed to be a Coward! (13/8/77-29/10/77) in which a madwoman terrorises a swimmer with threats of drowning; and Blind Faith, (26/4/80-2/8/80) where a blind horse is taught to show-jump.

Title: The Slave of Form 3B
Artist: Trini Tinturé
Writer: Unknown
Publication: 13 March 1976 to 17 July 1976
Synopsis: Nervous Tania is a new pupil at Waverley boarding school, where she comes under the thrall of interfering know-all Stacey. Stacey's discovery that she can exert hypnotic control over the weak-willed Tania leads her down a very dark path. Her early experiments with this newly discovered power merely subject Tania to a series of embarrassing practical jokes; however, soon Tania is doing all of Stacey's assignments, cheating, stealing, sabotaging sports rivals and being systematically cut off from other potential friends and all possible avenues of help. Stacey will stop at nothing to become Waverley's next "Girl of the Year" and, when Tania discovers the truth and tries to fight back, resorts to malevolent tactics of mind control that put Tania's very life in danger....
Significance: If Slaves of War Orphan Farm was Tammy's most notorious story, there can only be one candidate for Jinty's! The indignities and torture that poor, weak Tania goes through during the course of the 19 installments of this serial are unprecedented. She is not just a means to an end – Stacey revels gloriously in her ability to get Tania to do anything she wants, from stealing test papers and sabotaging her own work, to wrecking her chances of finding friendship with the staff of a local nursery where she helps out. As her powers grow, Stacey proves herself to be the ultimate Jinty villain, plucking thoughts from Tania's mind, using them against her, and leaving Tania utterly friendless and derided, the "shame" of the school. And the tragedy eventually takes on dangerously extreme levels – having been hypnotised into walking at night along a high school wall, Tania falls and is severely injured. Far from providing any help, Stacey drags her unconscious body to an old outbuilding, throws a sack over her, and leaves her there, only concerned about what this might mean to her "Girl of the Year" ambitions.
The artwork of Trini Tinturé is brilliant at conveying the haughtiness, the deviousness and the outright villainy of central character Stacey – dominating her unfortunate victim both physically and hypnotically. Her artwork was prevalent within Jinty, and utilised for a number of similar stories centred on devious, determined central characters, including Creepy Crawley (9/4/77-2/7/77), in which jealous Jean Crawley uses the powers of an ancient scarab brooch in order to see off a new school rival, but falls under the scarab’s evil powers, and precipitates an insect invasion! And also Battle of the Wills (2/7/77-1/10/77) in which Kate Wills, determined to defy her grandmother's wishes for her to pursue ballet, has herself cloned and enrolls at a gymnastics academy – only to find herself in conflict with her clone, who is equally resentful at being forced to do ballet.
But it is Stacey from The Slave of Form 3B who reigns supreme as Jinty's greatest villain, for her unashamed revelry in her powers, the extreme lengths to which she is prepared to go (which must have been shocking to readers back in 1976) and – in the face of eventual exposure and expulsion – a complete lack of repentance.
On the subject of bullying, mention should be made of Tears of a Clown (12/8/80-1/11/80) where Kathy Clowne is bullied for being clumsy, gawky and slow-to learn. The bullies just think it’s a huge joke and don’t know where to stop; the teachers don’t pick up on the problem and neither they nor Kathy’s parents intervene to find out why Kathy is doing so badly at school; and Kathy won’t speak out against the bullies. It sounds all too familiar, doesn’t it? And in Dracula’s Daughter, (6/6/81-19/9/81) the unfortunate Lydia Graves becomes the target of her classmates’ anger when her father becomes headmaster of Castle Gate Comprehensive. Mr Graves makes himself and Lydia extremely unpopular for conducting an overzealous campaign to turn the free-and-easy school into a strict grammar school, and earns himself the nickname “Dracula”.

Title: Fran of the Floods
Artist: Phil Gascoine
Writer: Unknown
Publication: 17 January 1976 to 11 August 1976
Synopsis: The sun sends out an extra glimmer of heat, triggering worldwide torrents of rain, and as a result there is devastation across the world. Britain is overwhelmed with floods and as society breaks down, young school girl Fran – initially having treated the whole situation as a joke, and then an adventure – is separated from her family. Believing her parents to have been killed in a flood that engulfs the school during a concert, she sets out on a dangerous journey north to Scotland, braving torrential rain and dangerous floodwaters, as well as an array of more human dangers.
Significance: As well as being extremely relevant in today's current society with its warnings of global warming, this hard hitting survival story was constantly absorbing and intelligently crafted throughout its length. It took time to pace itself properly – the early episodes focussing on the initial newscasts of disasters far from British shores and treated with only casual interest by Fran and her friends. Then the rains get worse, and panic sets in– the looting starts, and Fran's home is put in danger. And after that, when the school is overwhelmed – a good half dozen episodes into the story– the presentation is certainly shocking – adults and children being seen to perish as Fran swims for her life. Over the course of this mammoth length (105 pages over 35 weeks) serial, Fran meets friends in the course of her journey to Scotland, as well as dangers from birds, rats, diseased villages, chemical pollution, and marauding gangs of thugs trying to set themselves up as tin-pot dictators in a world where law and society have broken down completely. It plays very much like a junior version of the apocalyptic drama series Survivors, the second season of which was actually transmitted while this story was being presented every week in Jinty, and many of the predicaments that Fran faces are the same as those faced in the BBC series – at one point Fran and her friend Jill even find themselves consigned to a slave gang! The artwork of Jinty stalwart Phil Gascoine was highly effective in presenting the rain soaked, waterlogged landscapes that Fran had to cross, as well as providing a well drawn character in Fran herself.
More tales of a devastated Britain were told in such tales as Jassy's Wand of Power (2/10 76 – 13/11/76) in which the problem is one of drought, and central character Jassy finds herself the focus of unwelcome attention as a water diviner in a society where such talents are regarded as "witchcraft". In The Forbidden Garden, (24/3/79-28/7/79) mankind has poisoned the earth so no plants can grow, creating a grim, disciplined world ruled by castes and strict rationing of limited supplies, and harsh measures such as killing pets to stretch food supplies and imprisonment for curfew breakers and water-stealers. Amid this bleakness Laika Severn discovers an oasis of fertility in the Forbidden Zone and breaks the law to grow a flower for her dying sister.
On the related theme of survival, Shona Owens, The Girl the World Forgot, (6/9/80-13/12/80) thinks little but the pleasures in life until she and her dog Scuffer are stranded on a deserted island and find themselves on the steep learning curve on the struggle for survival. The struggle gets even bleaker when winter sets in with no apparent rescue, and on top of that there seems to be a presence on the island that is not making Shona welcome. A more bizarre survival story occurs in Alice in a Strange Land (17/2/79-9/6/79) where Alice Jones is considered a wet blanket until she and her classmates crash-land in a Peruvian jungle and find themselves prisoners of a weird Inca culture.
However, none had the breadth and scope of Fran of the Floods– or provided the same emotional resonance. Although the story ends on an optimistic note, Fran and her friends are forced to accept that the world has now changed, and that a lot of the people they once knew are no longer with them – not even the school bully who, it has been demonstrated, sacrificed her own life to save Fran's during their initial escape from the school. The final frame is one of a huge monument to the lost – a sombre, thoughtful end to this epic, forward thinking story.

Re: If we had a list of the 100 greatest serials in girls co
Tammy, these posts are excellent and just what I hoped we would see people doing on ComicsUK. Could I ask a favour? Can you include a scan of a page of the serial as it may help others (as well as myself) in building up our ability to recognise the artists. It also helps to narrow down who it cannot be as well in the case of some of the ones that need identifying.
If it's not possible then don't worry about it.

I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!

How about 'The Land of Nowhere' from Bunty - a very strange series with excellent artwork by A. E. Allen?

(Incidentally, I still think that 'Belle of the Ballet' and 'Belle and Mamie' ought to count as just one strip)

Re: If we had a list of the 100 greatest serials in girls co
Yes, it's like something out of Alice in Wonderland. The Golden Age Classics also agreed it was Bunty's most fantastic of fantasy stories in the 1980s. Okay. And perhaps The Children's Champion from Bunty should go in too.philcom55 wrote:How about 'The Land of Nowhere' from Bunty - a very strange series with excellent artwork by A. E. Allen?

"Gone were the days of ballet classes at the Arenska Dancing School! The school was shut forever and Madame Arenska had retired to the south of France. Now what were the inseparable friends, Belle and Mamie to do? One night they were at a party when they heard a van draw up below. Fate was on it's way!"
Beginning a completely separate series.
Also 'Calling Nurse Abbott' started the same way evolving from 'Susan of St Brides'.
Just a thought, for what it's worth!
Re: If we had a list of the 100 greatest serials in girls co
Children's Champion is a good story, I think often it ends up in the shadow of the similar themed Angel, but it is good in it's own right and has some lovely art.
The Land of Nowhere looks interesting! Similarly The Fights of Flopear is a lot of fun with a girl visiting strange places.

Re: If we had a list of the 100 greatest serials in girls co
Yes, The Children's Champion is underrated compared to Angel. For one thing, the heroine is not dying of a rare disease. I almost decided not to nominate it. But the Golden Books do say it is among Bunty's best. And it was reprinted in Lucky Charm. So it will be included. Unless someone has a different opinion?peace355 wrote:Children's Champion is a good story, I think often it ends up in the shadow of the similar themed Angel, but it is good in it's own right and has some lovely art.

Re: If we had a list of the 100 greatest serials in girls co
I think these should progress Tammyfan. Alona, Alice in Spaceland, Jane bond, Lettice Leefe, Moira slave girl of Rome, Westward the wagons.
Alona had some great adventures, Alice, Jane, Moira, and Westward the wagons were very adventurous strips for girls comics. Lettice Leefe well who doesn't like her!
I think you could drop Chairman Cherry, Calling nurse Abbott! and Uncle Lionel.
Anyone agree, disagree, to help Tammyfan with her list?
