What comics did you buy today?

Funnily enough I just picked up four issues of the Nightmare Suspense Picture Library from the same year. All a bit crude and gruesome, but great fun - I particularly like the zombies in no.3's 'Curse of the Living Dead'!

I have got a number of these nightmare comics and it's sister title many are loosely based on movies etc of the time . One of the titles is very much based on the hammer movie X the unknown . Anyone know how many issues were printed in the series and titles ?. The comic I got today not British was a 100 page superman family comic .

According to the British guide, Nightmare Suspense ran to 14 issues, 1966 - 1967
Tales of Terror - the guide only lists #1 & 2 but it ran to at least 10 in 1966.
Hopefully Phil can shed more light on this.
While we're on this subject, the later (1971) Pocket Chiller Library has a distinct lack of info. also, being listed as #s 1 & 2. But as I have #105 which is a 10p copy, it must have run past 1971. Anyone have more info.?

None of this touches on the MV line of pocket libraries. It's always the same - the more you learn, the more questions arise.

Thanks for the info, the only British comics I now mostly collect are pocket library's as you get so many asst titles often good art and stories, and the bonus is I get can get a lot more comics in my comic store room and the paper seems to last much better than normal comics of that age. I'm slowly selling off my normal British comics and just going to keep the pocket library's , Gemini 2000 series is one of the titles that's not bad it's not in the same league as a rick random comic but worth getting as they are often only a £1 or 2 on eBay

Today I received a bunch of Spellbounds. Including issue 7, which fills a gap, giving me a run from 1 to 41 (although ironically also containing a gap where someone filled in a competition form), and bringing the total number of issues I am still missing down to 14.

I think my favourite is actually issue 60 with its Vengeance of Vampirene cover. Not only is it the most outrageous use of alliteration using a girl's name, but it also has the image of a teenage girl dressed like Batman, only on skis. If I wore T-Shirts I might have this cover made into one. I may just scan it and get it printed out and framed.

Oxfam in Lithgae had a load of 60s Hornets in, so I bought those at £1.50 each. Still a number of Look & Learn with Ranger but a fiver each, so passed. Not a fan of those anyway.

Just bought the 1977 2000AD Summer Special Supercomic on ebay. The only 2000AD Special I didn't have. £7.00!

I've been after it for ages, and it's not scarce but it usually seems wildly overpriced. I think it actually completes my 2000AD collection: all progs from #1, all Specials and all Annuals, plus all Tornado and Starlord publications. I'll have to double check, though.
Of course, Judge Dredd is a different matter...

Speaking of Specials I just got the 1969 Beano Summer Special. I know the front cover's in the gallery section and Rab has previously posted the back cover here but I couldn't resist showing them together!





Even at the end of his life Dudley Watkins was without equal: the Beano Summer Specials never looked half so 'special' again. (The only thing I don't understand is why Biffo was always referred to as a bear, when he was so obviously a giant rodent!!! )

That's great Phil! One of the most memorable comics publications ever from my childhood [I was 7: 1969 was the best-ever year for comics for me personally, for all sorts of reasons], the BEANO SUMMER SPECIAL 1969 was on my 'hit list' for a few years, but always someone beat me to the punch on e-bay with last minute bids until last year when I finally landed a copy.


Your cover is in better nick than mine, though: tell you what I intend doing, I 'll Photoshop these pages above and remove most of the blemishes and imperfections, [it's mostly just the blacks, which need deepened---easy to fix] print out colour A4 copies and get them framed up in the bathroom, next to my collection of Bamforth seaside postcards....great stuff!
